I've seen the bling and it does little to impress me.

The new Cadillac Escalade is awesome, but it's so much more than a really big ornament for the latest videos on MTV.

GM enlisted the help of hip-hop stars and professional athletes (and I think one or two automotive designers) when they redesigned the 2007 Escalade many moons ago they really hit the nail on the head with this new version. It's handsome, it's comfortable, it's powerful - it's everything a great luxury SUV should be.

The new Escalade is based on GM's new full-size SUV platform, which is also used on the GMC Envoy and Chevrolet Yukon; it features a new powertrain, chassis and safety and interior systems. The highlight of this is the powertrain which includes a 6.2-litre V8 engine that delivers a whopping 403-horsepower and 417 lbs.-ft. of torque - more than enough to propel this beast past anything on the highway when passing is necessary. The engine is all-aluminum and uses variable valve timing to improve fuel economy, as does the smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission.

The interior is just as nice as the new GMC Yukon, though with the obvious addition of luxury amenities befitting of a Cadillac. Supple leather covers every seat as well as the steering wheel with wood accenting the steering wheel, gear shifter, door and dash. A Bose audio system with 10 speakers, tinted windows all around for privacy and a six-disc CD changer that plays DVD-audio CDs also come standard here.

Now, it was my responsibility to drive a group of people on a four hour road trip during my time with the Escalade. They were far from what I would call an 'entourage', but they had plenty of input as to what they liked about the SUV - and they liked a lot. The optional rear-seat DVD player kept them occupied for hours (a nice bonus was the slew of audio jacks so everyone could listen in on the movie, not just those with the Escalade's wireless headphones) and not one person complained about being uncomfortable or cramped.

The exterior has just as many additions to it, but don't be fooled into thinking it's all just about looking good. Sure, the abundance of chrome, optional 22-inch wheels and blinding high-intensity discharge headlamps look great. But don't forget that the windshield has been angled to be more aerodynamic and reduce fuel consumption and even the side mirrors are more streamlined to reduce wind noise inside the cabin. This isn't all just press material stuff - everything GM said it did to improve this SUV actually did improve this SUV.

The new Escalade is definitely one of the more memorable redesigns early for the 2007 model year thus far. It's perfectly fine to notice it and appreciate it as it appears in music videos, but hopefully people will see past the chrome and tinted glass to what a superb SUV this really is.
