The midsize family sedan is a staple in the auto world.

Calgary families depend on the four-door, five-seat sedans to move them around the city.

They're trustworthy, dependable but, for the most part. unexciting.

Mazda, however, has taken it upon itself to create a midsize sedan that injects some excitement into the segment. To that end, it builds the Mazdaspeed6.

The company began by putting a turbocharged 2.3-L DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine under the hood.

This powerplant produces 270 hp at 5,500 r.p.m. and 280 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,000 r.p.m.

Routing that power to the wheels is a somewhat stiff but effective six-speed transmission.

Because it's a four-cylinder engine, fuel consumption isn't astronomical for a midsize sedan, at 12.5 L/100 km in the city and 8.5 L/100 km on the highway.

The Mazdaspeed6 is equipped with standard AWD. Standard traction control also ensures the wheels with the traction do the pulling.

Mazdaspeed6's sophisticated suspension -- double wishbone setup at the front, multilink rear arrangement with stabilizer bars front and back -- offer a combination of good ride quality and responsive handling, especially when combined with standard dynamic stability control.

If trouble is encountered, four-wheel discs with ABS and electronic brake-force distribution haul the Mazdaspeed6 to a standstill.

Inside, the Mazdaspeed reflects the Mazda6's attributes -- front head-room that's adequate if not generous and rear seating that can manage three adults but should be limited to two on longer trips.

This is a well-equipped sedan, with such standard features as seven-speaker Bose AM/FM stereo with six-disc in-dash CD changer, air conditioning, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry and cruise.

Pricing for the Mazdaspeed6 starts at $35,995 and tops out at $41,295.

That's not cheap but, in the world of performance midsize sedans, it's competitive.

And it'll still take the kids to their hockey games.
