Here's the thing: when you buy a car made by luxury maker Mercedes-Benz that costs around $120,000, you can be pretty certain it's going to be a pretty amazing vehicle.

The real question is: how does it stand up to the competitors? The answer: very well.

The S550 has some stiff competition from other European luxury sedans such as the BMW 7-Series and the Audi A8. All of these vehicles provide whisper quiet interiors, an endless array of technological equipment, a ton of room for its occupants, disgustingly powerful engines and top-quality materials from top-to-bottom, inside and out.

Granted, pitting the all-wheel drive, long wheelbase, V8 versions of each shows an immediate difference in price, but you really do get a whole lot more with the S-Class. The S550 4Matic starts at $122,000, while the BMW 750Li begins at $115,000 and the Audi A8 4.2L Quattro begins at a downright affordable $101,360.

What the S550 gives you though is a 7-speed automatic (compared to 6-speed automatics in the other two) and a 5.5-litre displacement (4.8-litres and 4.2-litres in the BMW and Audi, respectively) equalling an asphalt-smoldering (and gas-squandering) 382-horsepower and 391 lbs.-ft. of torque. A sedan like this isn't usually made for street racing, but when you need that kind of power, it's there for you at a moment's notice, with barely a hint of hesitation.

Oh, and the long-wheelbase editions of those other Euro entries are both significantly shorter than the S550. Again, you're never going to be hurting for room in the backseat of an A8 or 7-Series, but if you need the absolute most, the S550 is what you should be looking at.

The S550 truly is luxury from top to bottom, with barely a weak spot to point out. I can say without exaggeration that even the most comfortable Laz-E-Boy I've sat in can't come close to the comfort of sitting the S550's seats. By the end of my time with the S-Class, I was wondering if I could manage to remove one of its headrests to use as a pillow in my bed without Mercedes-Benz noticing.

The 4Matic is - again, as expected but worth noting - a huge boon for anyone who lives in an area where snow falls at any point throughout the year.

The little extras such as a cooled storage bin, fully-customizable seats adjustments and heated steering wheel also make this a pleasure to drive or be driven in.

And if you ever do get in an accident, you have eight standard air bags to help protect you.

In many ways, it's actually very difficult to judge and review a luxury vehicle like the S550 because it has so few true weaknesses. Nothing about it is in-your-face, so if you want to really show off your ride, this won't be for you. If you're looking for any type of fuel-efficiency, the S550 really doesn't do the trick either (you should be looking at something in the form of a Lexus hybrid for that).

If you're just looking for a luxurious sedan that will give you and your passengers unadulterated comfort and safety, along with a long list of technology to make your life easier, why look any further than Mercedes' S-Class?
