What exactly does the Subaru Legacy spec.B get that the 'regular' GT (which is a fine car in its own right) doesn't already?

Well, it pretty much comes down to drivetrain and suspension. Exclusive just to the spec.B is a six-speed manual transmission, a limited slip differential, vehicle stability control and a sport-tuned suspension.

Though a few of those make this a more fun car, the VHC makes this an even better performer in the winter if one wants a year-rounder that can be used to make it to work five days a week.

It doesn't quite live up to the quality of its Japanese counterparts ... the doors almost feel flimsy compared to just about anything that's out today.

Anytime you get the words 'Subaru' and 'turbocharged' in the same sentence, you're pretty much guaranteed a proven performer. The Legacy spec.B will easily zip around any road and keep its composure even over rough and uneven pavement. Oddly, it seemed like this Legacy's engine sounded strange - it wasn't quite a pleasing, guttural sound ... it just wasn't very refined. The more the RPMs were pushed up (and they often were), the more it felt like the engine was struggling. It wasn't so much an enticing feeling as an odd one.

The Legacy spec.B is also in a strange bracket, in that it doesn't have a lot of direct competition. There are people who will surely say that it's too expensive for what it offers (a typical response from many in the automotive industry when speaking about any Subaru) but though it by no means has that 'luxury' feel of an Audi or BMW, it (and all Subarus) come standard with one of the best, time-tested all-wheel drive systems and the Boxer engine is a fantastic one. Not the most fuel efficient, but one of the most fun. But it is a tough thing to do; it's definitely more expensive than the Mazda6's and Honda Accords but not quite as expensive as a BMW 3 Series.

Safety features are nothing to write home about. It comes with six standard air bags (it had better for $45,000!) and of course the all-wheel drive and VDC is great but nothing else is worth noting besides collapsible foot pedals and steering wheel.

The Legacy spec.B is a fun car that's also pretty durn practical too. It costs about $5,000 more than the 'regular' Legacy GT sedan and it's up to you to decide if the added features are worth it. It doesn't add more power (like a lot of 'souped up' vehicles do) but either way - it goes. It still feels like there's a little something missing from it though. A few more standard features? A little higher quality? A little more in-your-face styling? Either way, the spec.B is much more good than bad.
