Please forgive me Corolla ... though you were my first car years ago and I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for you, your competitors are passing you faster than you could possibly realize. They're pulling away from you on all fronts - styling, comfort, safety and options. Just remember - a loyal fan base will only get you so far.

Don't get me wrong - you're still a wonderful car. There's some nice kick in you, thanks to your 1.8-litre engine, and your slick, standard 5-speed manual transmission only helps things even more. In addition, few competitors can touch you in terms of fuel economy. But while your horsepower numbers (126-horsepower) have stayed virtually the same for five years, the likes of the redesigned Honda Civic and the Nissan Sentra (each producing 140-hp) are quickly rising above you. Heck, those cars are even fighting the good fight when it comes to combatting rising gas prices - just look at the Sentra, with its standard 6-speed manual transmission and optional continuously variable transmission.

Car buyers are even more value-savvy nowadays and it won't take them long to realize that other vehicles are offering a lot more for about the same price - the Hyundai Elantra comes instantly to mind. For about $500 less, car buyers can get an Elantra that offers heated side mirrors, heated front seats, cruise control, sunroof and steering wheel audio controls.

The Corolla S is also lacking in the safety department, with no available side or rear curtain air bags (only the top-of-the-line LE trim includes that - and only as an option). Comparably-priced Nissan Sentras and Honda Civics do have front and rear side air bags as standard equipment. ABS brakes are standard on S and LE models, which redeem the Corolla somewhat.

There are still some other undeniably Corolla-esque features which I appreciate such as a surprisingly large trunk, handsome styling and easy-to-use radio and HVAC controls.

Corolla S, you're by no means a bad car. You're fun to drive, extremely fuel efficient, easy to use and far from ugly. You should be careful though, because your rivals have shown they are ready to compete fiercely for sales in what is a very popular segment - especially in Canada. It's high time you catch up!

Can't wait to see you in 2008 ... please don't let me down.
