The popular TV show CSI Miami features eye-catching people in stylish clothes strutting their stuff on the beach or lazing majestically in the latest swimwear by a star-studded, indigo blue pool. Somewhere nearby, an equally gorgeous super sports car or blinged-out SUV is sure to be seen, polished to glistening perfection under the cloudless skies of Florida.

This was the setting in which I found myself driving the stunning and stylish 2007 Jaguar XK Convertible.

With daily flights from Toronto to Fort Lauderdale and Miami via Westjet, getting here was easy. Exiting the city centre, we took the Rickenbacker Causeway over Biscayne Bay past Crandon Park and arrived under the canopy of the Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne.

I watched in silent amazement as valet attendants and bellman quickly congregated at both doors. Before I knew it, keys were taken, luggage was whisked away to the front desk and hotel doors were opened without my asking. It pays to arrive at such a place in a Salsa Red convertible Jaguar.

The only AAA Five Diamond resort in the Miami area, The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne offers the best of everything. With property features and amenities that include a 20,000-sq.-ft Mobil Four Star spa, two outdoor oceanfront pools, one hard and 10 soft clay tennis courts plus four restaurants including the renowned Cioppino, it would be entirely possible to forget about driving and bask in the ambience of its grandeur.

Beach activities include kayaking, windsurfing and catamarans. Of course where there is an ocean, beautiful people tend to congregate, so sun tanning and sipping colourful drinks with little umbrellas is never a bad idea.

In a land filled with Bentleys, Porsches and Ferraris, it may seem difficult to stand out in a crowd. Not so in a 2007 Jaguar XK Convertible. Sexy is an overused word these days, but it describes perfectly what makes this dynamic two-door so enticing.

Part of the XK Convertible’s charm is its eccentric nature. Gear changes are made in the form of a “J” pattern, with “auto driving” mode positioned to the right and “sport gear” on the left. Just in case the desire to go racing is too overpowering, paddle shifters are mounted on the steering wheel.

A stint inside the cockpit is sure to leave a lasting impression on the senses. In typical British fashion, the leather and wood treatment is to die for. Seats are posh and the central gauges inspire power and authority on the road.

Leaving the hotel for an afternoon drive, I watched as parasurfers and pleasure boats took to the waves on both sides of the causeway. An hour later I was within sight of Homestead Miami Speedway. Surrounded by flat Florida marshland, there is little to do here other than navigate the many perfectly paved roads winding along the coast towards Biscayne National Park.

Zigzagging a path through a series of left and right turns, my route took me past numerous palm tree farms and eventually to the main park entrance. Standing on the beach, I was treated to a perfect view of the Miami cityscape in the distance.

Beating under the hood of the Jaguar XK is the heart of a proud feline; a 4.2-litre, 300-hp V8 that purrs with every stroke of the gas pedal. Push it to the floor and this cat growls as it accelerates from 0-100 km/h in a mere 6.3 seconds. Top speed is set at 255 km/h.

Silky smooth is the best way to describe the engine. Around town it makes very little noise, belying the speed available as you progress upwards through each gear. On the highway, the XK Convertible easily accelerates to triple digits, though I resisted temptation given the tenacity of the many State Troopers who patrol Florida roads closely.

Both the front and rear suspension of the Jaguar XK feature independent double-wishbone with coil over “eCATS” enhanced active dampers and anti-rollbar. Steering is Servotronic 2 power-assisted, speed-sensitive variable-ratio rack and pinion.

Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS anchor the XK no matter the driving conditions. Additional safety features include Trac dynamic stability control with traction control, emergency brake control, electronic brakeforce distribution and electronic parking brake.

Of course Miami is as much about the show as it is the go and few convertibles offer the sophisticated elegance that permeates the Jaguar XK Convertible from front to back. Pull up to a stoplight, pop the top and listen to the sound of ooohs and ahhhs emanating from other vehicles nearby. It’s completely intoxicating.

Try as I might during my stay in Key Biscayne and Miami, I never caught sight of the infamous Lieutenant Horatio Caine driving his steel grey Hummer H2. Too bad for him — the 2007 Jaguar XK Convertible would have made an excellent addition to the set.
