It should come as no surprise that driving the Suzuki XL7 on a twisty country road is akin to piloting a small vessel across the windswept waters of a vast lake. In other words, it is a whole lot of fun!

You expect an exorbitant amount of body roll for a vehicle so large, but unexpectedly this well designed SUV has a way of toning down the wallow to a reasonable level. Having driven many vehicles of similar design over the past two decades, I find the Suzuki XL7 weaves and bobs much less than most.

Though I would never bestow it with the title of “Road Scholar,” I have no concern taking it up a notch when the way ahead starts to unfold like a silk ribbon caught by a sudden gust of wind. Inside, all is calm as excellent forward visibility eases driver and passenger confidence. I wish the same could be said for backing up where an unusually high rear hatch window is ineffective at providing a clear view of what’s behind. The counterpoint to this is improved ease of access to the rear storage area; it would just be nice to have both.

I continue to enjoy the XM Satellite, particularly the option of listening to songs from various decades. Like most music aficionados, I understand the best music happened in the ’70s, but the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s were pretty good as well. Fuel mileage seems to improve slightly with use and I am learning, albeit slowly, to adjust windows from a central location and not the driver’s window. I guess you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.
