The other day my younger daughter and a couple of her friends were playing Scrabble on the back deck.

"Is 'tween' a real word?" one of them asked.

The answer is yes. According to my Oxford, a tween is someone between the ages of eight and 14 who has not yet, or only recently, become a teenager.

That got me thinking about our long-term Nissan Versa SL. It's the tween of small automobiles - bigger than a subcompact, but not quite the size of a compact car.

For instance, our 2007 Versa sedan has a 2,600 mm (102.4-in.) wheelbase and an overall length of 4,470 mm (176 in.). That's right between the 2,460 mm wheelbase and 3,825 mm overall length of a Toyota Yaris and the Nissan Sentra's dimensions of 2,685/4,567 mm.

Versa's extra inches translate into more cabin space, with a front seat just about as spacious as that found in big brother Maxima, a rear seat with lots of leg room and a generous 391-litre (13.8-cu.-ft.) trunk.

But this extra size doesn't translate into much of a penalty at the gas pumps. With its 1.8-litre inline four and four-speed automatic transmission, over 3,500 km our Versa has delivered 7.5 L/100 km in combined highway-city driving. Nissan claims fuel economy numbers of 8.5 L/100 km city and 6.2 L/100 km highway in sedans equipped with the automatic.

Versa has been a big hit for Nissan Canada. Last month, almost half of the company's car sales in this country were Versas - 2,172 units out of 4,412. That helped propel the Nissan brand here to a 35% increase over June 2006.

And if all those Versa buyers are as happy with their vehicles as we our with our long-term test car, they're going to be very happy indeed.
