Out of the mouths of babes.

"Papa, can we take monster truck?”

That’s what my three-year-old granddaughter called the big red Dodge Ram Mega Cab test truck from Chrysler Canada.

Kayley loved that truck ... not for the ride, not for the leather upholstery, not for the 6.7-litre Cummins diesel, not for the six-speed automatic transmission.

I think it was for its sheer size ... and the rear-seat video entertainment system.

The huge cab meant there was plenty of room for Papa and Grandma in the front and her car seat and her brother’s baby seat in the back seat with room for an adult between. She likes company.

She also notices things.

“Monster truck is a baaaad turner.”

And she’s right. If you’re going to drive a Dodge Ram 2500 Mega Cab, you’d better be able to plan your turns well in advance; this thing’s turning radius is, in a word, huge. You won’t be making any U-turns on regular roadways. Otherwise steering response is quick and handling precise.

The test vehicle was a fully tricked-out 2500 Laramie 4x4 with the brand new 6.7-litre Cummins turbo diesel engine with Bluetec system.

Besides big-time power, the engine is 50% quieter (your neighbours won’t be upset by noise) and it’s cleaner with a 90% reduction in particulate matter and 50% cut in NOx emissions.

NOx is cut by using a water-cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system with the air reintroduced into the intake system, keeping turbo and intercooler components. Particulates are reduced through a self-cleaning diesel particulate filter. The muffler is isolated from the emissions control system.

The new engine, which replaces the 5.9-litre Cummins turbo diesel, puts out 325 hp at 3,013 rpm and 650 lb.-ft. of stump-pulling torque at just 1,500 rpm,

With low kms on the clock, this was one thirsty engine and for the first 2,000 km the average was never better than 21.7 L/100 km, but with 2,500 km under its wheels, the mileage suddenly improved to a respectable 14.1 L/100 km at normal highway speeds.

Damned acceptable, because adding a load isn’t going to drop that level much.

The engine is linked to a smooth six-speed automatic transmission with tow/haul mode. When hauling a trailer, you can access engine exhaust braking by pressing a button located between the seat heater switches.

Oh yeah, butt warmers ... it may be a hard-working truck, but it does have some class inside, every bit as much as any high-end sport utility vehicle: power everything, leather, entertainment system and DVD navigation to name a few.

You don’t want to jam your foot to the floor off the line with this truck. If you’re not in four-wheel drive, you’re gonna smoke the tires. If you’re looking to pass on the highway, you’ll love the response.

Like to tow? You can hitch 15,900 lb. of trailer or jam 2,970 lbs. of stuff into the box.

Put that kind of weight into it and you’ll probably find the ride has improved. When it’s not hauling or towing, the truck rides, well, like a truck, with its rigid beam front axle with five-link coil-spring suspension is standard on four-wheel-drive versions while the rear suspension is a heavy-duty solid axle with two-stage longitudinal leaf springs.

Otherwise, the Mega Cab cabin is a pleasant place to spend time. Wind noise on the test truck was surprisingly light except for a bit of rumble around the trailer-tow mirrors. Road noise is effectively isolated as well.

The 111.1-in. cabin has plenty of room for carrying people: three in back and two up front. If you want to carry cargo inside, folding the rear seats gives you 16.8 sq. ft. of flat load floor and the large rear doors that open 85 degrees make it easy to load larger packages.

The test truck’s long list of optional features included a killer audio system and a navigation system that actually seems to know where it is even when well off the beaten track.

My wife loved the optional adjustable pedals and found the seats agreeable over a long haul.

She never did enjoy the climb into or out of the cab, however.

The new diesel puts the Ram right into the tough truck game. It’s as quiet as the rest, there’s power to spare, you can get every imaginable amenity and it looks good, too.

I guess the final words should belong to Kayley.
