From the beginning I've been impressed with our long-term Versa's back seat.

No, I mean from the very first time I saw the car, or at least the Japanese Tiida it's based on, at Nissan's design centre in Farmington Hills, Mich.

I was so wowed by the roominess of the rear seat that one of the photos used to illustrate my story back in March 2005 showed me sitting back there with a big grin on my face.

I'm still smiling, even though as the primary operator of our long-term 2007 Versa sedan I don't often get to sit anywhere but the driver's seat.

In a normal 750-word road test, I'd only get to write one or two sentences extolling the virtues of the Versa's back seat. But that's the beauty of long-term reports: I can spend this entire update on the topic.

So let's compare our test car's back seat to those of some of its main competitors - some smaller, some larger, since the Versa fits into its own automotive niche somewhere between compact and subcompact.

At 966 mm (38.0 in.), Versa has more rear legroom than Toyota Yaris or Corolla, Nissan Sentra, Chev Cobalt, VW Rabbit or Honda Fit. With 962 mm (37.9 in.) of rear headroom, it's beaten only by Rabbit and Fit. Only in shoulder room does the Versa suffer, where its 1287 mm (50.7 in.) is topped by the larger (and wider) Corolla, Sentra and Cobalt.

No wonder the many passengers who've ridden back there in the almost 6,000 km we've racked up on this car have never complained. It's a comfy place to be, with a centre armrest that flips down giving passengers not only a comfy spot to rest their inboard elbows, but also a pair of handy cupholders.

And have I mentioned that Versa's front seat is bigger than that of a Maxima?

Maybe I should extol its virtues in our next long-term report in two weeks.
