Perfect for the family
If you’re in the market for a minivan, do yourself a favour and take a look at the new Chrysler Town & Country. Actually, even if you’re not in the market for a minivan, do yourself a favour and test drive this incredible vehicle.
I know that may sound a bit funny, but I’m speaking from the perspective of a man with a wife and kids. And for someone in my situation the Town & Country is an absolute dream machine, even if you’re looking for a family vehicle but have poo-pooed the idea of a minivan.
The T&C has been completely redesigned and reengineered for 2008, inside and out. On the outside, it is noticeably boxier and more muscular than the last generation minivan. Chrome accents on the bumpers, doors, grille and outside mirrors (on the Limited edition) add character to what would otherwise be a very simple exterior.
The big news for 2008 is the interior where the T&C is packed with goodies families will have no trouble taking advantage of. Although the clever Stow ’n Go seating system is still available, the Swivel ’n Go seating system is the new headliner. With Swivel ’n Go, the second-row seats can be rotated 180 degrees to face rearward, so second-row passengers can face third-row passengers.
Chrysler took this good idea a step further by engineering a convenient table that snaps into place between the second and third rows. We had an opportunity to pack the T&C full of friends and family and they had an absolute blast during a recent road trip. The fact that they were all facing each other made all the difference and the party atmosphere was impossible to suppress. “Are we there yet” was not uttered at all.
Home theatre to go
The other big news for 2008 is the MyGig Multimedia Infotainment System. This thing is absolutely incredible. It comes with a 20 GB hard drive where you can store all sorts of information including your favourite music and photographs.
Imagine that — you can take your favourite family snapshots, load them onto MyGig and view them whenever you please, or use them as a “desktop” display. All data is easily transferred from an mp3 player or a laptop computer via a handy USB port.
An innovative rear Seat video system allows you to watch DVDs or play video games on two separate screens. And when the vehicle is in park the MyGig computer display on the dash lets you watch any DVD playing on one of the other screens in the vehicle. If you’re doing the math, that means you get three screens in one vehicle able to watch two different movies simultaneously, or one movie and a video game.
That dash-mounted screen does double duty as the display for the rear backup camera, as well as for maps when the onboard navigation system is activated. Chrysler throws in a one-year subscription to Sirius satellite radio – also controlled by the same screen.
Ambiance
T&C minivans have always been known for their luxurious interiors, and our tester didn’t disappoint. It came equipped with soft leather seats and suede accents. Both the first and second-row captain’s chairs are heated, which made our kids very happy on cold mornings.
Whomever engineered the interior lights for the T&C deserves a standing ovation. LED lights are strategically placed throughout to add just the right amount of illumination to the cargo and passenger area, as well as storage compartments and map pockets in the front doors.
Chrysler also added “halo” lighting around the overhead console. It provides indirect lighting to both the second and third row — just enough to allow rear passengers to see in the dark, but not enough to distract the driver.
Although all these fancy lights are practical and useful, they also set a certain relaxing mood inside the passenger cabin. None of the LEDs are harsh, yet they manage to illuminate what they’re supposed to. It’s the kind of lighting technology and atmosphere you’d expect to find in an executive jet.
Powertrain
Our tester was equipped with a robust 4.0-litre V6 mated to a smooth six-speed automatic tranny. The 251 ponies under the hood are more than enough for daily commuter challenges, as well as the occasional power pass on the highway.
Since the interior is well insulated from outside noise, you only hear the engine when you floor it. Otherwise, it’s a gentle hum in the distance, making it possible for Mom and Dad to have a civilized conversation with each other, or with second and third-row passengers.
For the record, I’m not a big minivan fan and prefer a family-friendly sedan or a crossover to anything a typical soccer mom would crave. But Chrysler has done such an good job with this completely redesigned version of the T&C that it’s a must-see for anyone shopping for kid-friendly transportation.
