I like saving money as much as the next guy.

Check that ... I'm cheap.

I hate spending money on anything. I'm the guy that goes on ebay, looking for a really great deal only to get pissed of because I might be forced to bid an extra penny for a 99 cent gizmo.

And that gizmo better perform.

That's just me. And I'm not alone.

There are lots of people out there just like me who are looking for that next great deal, especially when it comes to a new car.

The Suzuki SX4 may just fall right into the right category on the family shopping list.

The SX4 sedan has a fresh look from the SX4 hatchback. With the loss of the rear-end weight the profile is lighter and sportier and that isn't a bad thing at all. I can see this vehicle being picked up by younger females who are looking for that 'cute' little car.

Equipped with aluminum alloy wheels, fog lamps and a body kit complete with side sills the SX4 Sport package adds some definite style and makes the SX4 seem larger than it is.

But even for a compact car the SX4 still has room.

With big windows and a high roofline few will complain that they have no room for their noggins. Leg room is good up front and with no large centre console to get in the way; larger adults should have more than enough room even with the seat moved up to accommodate rear passengers.

The seats are comfortable in front and back, and give ample support to the legs and back.

The trunk is surprisingly large for a car this small, with the only thing missing — 60/40 split rear seats.

Fit and finish is top notch with nice textures and change of pace with fluid lines and silvery accents throughout.

Mounted in the centre stack is an AM/FM, six CD/MP3/WPA player hooked up to a thumping eight speakers with a subwoofer. A leather-wrapped, tilt steering wheel comes with mounted audio controls and cruise controls all of which —including the audio system — come standard with the Sport package.

High on the dash is a nifty quick display that shows the time, temperature, fuel consumption and range.

Climate controls are large and easy to pick up at a glance. The cabin warms up quickly and maintains a consistent comfort level.

Six airbags also come as standard equipment in the SX4, with dual-front airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags and side-curtain airbags.

Under the hood is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that may not make many hairs on your neck stand up, but that's not why it's been put it the SX4.

The main focus is to get good gas mileage, while you go from point A to point B. And the SX4 does just that.

With a posted 9.2 L/100 km in the city and a gas sipping 6.2 on the highway you'll be more than happy not putting your entire paycheque into your gas tank.

The ride is relatively smooth and quiet with only a little road noise creeping in.

The kids didn't miss the view out of the family van with huge window to see anything that could be used in a game of 'I spy with my little eye.'

Stopping power comes from four-wheel disc brakes equipped with ABS, brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution.

The only thing missing is an all-wheel drive system, but it is available on the SX4 hatchback.

Maybe next time around ...

For a little runabout, the SX4 has lots of room and features that make this a definite contender in the compact car category.

And those with a tight grasp on their money might just be a little more relaxed once they get into the SX4 and find out it's worth every penny.
