One great wagon ... thank you very much

“Hey, Honey,” I said to my wife. “I did you see the latest test drive? It’s a Volvo XC70.”

She peered out the front window and cringed. “Another wagon?”

Quickly, I came up with the best defence I had. “Don’t think of it as another wagon. Think of it more as a short SUV.”

She tips her head to the side slightly and said, “It’s still a wagon.”

Damn. I lost again.

Or did I.

Even after all this time of seeing pretty much everything out on the road, it’s a pleasure to find something that makes you wish every car were like this.

Since it’s a Volvo, we’ll start with the safety stuff. And this one has some pretty cool features that put it over the top.

Within the rigid cabin that would keep most NASCAR drivers safe are whiplash protection front seats, dual front airbags, front seat side airbags and side curtain airbags to insure that if anything does happen you’re going to get out alive.

Then there are the options that keep you out of trouble, like the collision warning system that senses the car approaching other cars or objects, pre-loads the brakes and flashes a huge red light in front of your eyes to say: “Stopping might be a good idea now.”

The best feature though might be the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) which uses digital cameras mounted to the door mirrors to detect vehicles in the driver’s visual blind spot and alerts him/her with small lights built into the A-pillars.

The kids liked seeing the lights go on and off, but they got upset that the other cars were passing us.

No problem kids.

The XC70 comes with a powerful inline-six that will make you forget that you’re driving a car with a wagon-like silhouette.

Since power is readily available in the XC70, comfort isn’t skimped either.

The interior is appointed in buttery smooth leather and cool metal trim, with some nice additions and surprises.

On one of the coldest days this winter, wife was more than appreciative of one option. ‘Ahh. Heated seats. Thank you very much.’

I had to agree.

The best one in the rear seats where the kids, and I, were treated to a pair of integrated child booster seats. They felt like big kids and dad didn’t have to haul out the boosters from the van.

The cargo area is more than adequate, with plenty of room and an added privacy screen to keep prying eyes off your groceries.

Yes, I buy chocolate chip cookies by the case. Get over it.

For more room the rear seat can be folded down in as many combinations as the 40/20/40 spilt seats will allow.

Climate controls and audio controls were a breeze to use.

One thing that did bother me was the audio system. It sounded great when I was alone and had it turned up to make the windows rattle.

Yes, I’m in a Volvo and I listen to the Foo Fighters. Get over that too.

But when I turned it down to a conversation level when there was someone with me the sound seemed too thin — almost so much that I thought the cold temperatures were affecting the speakers.

The XC70 rides just as smoothly as the leather interior and handles very well for a car this size. Steering is light and responsive, and overall the XC70 is well balanced.

For a premium wagon, the XC70 has enough equipment and safety features to make most wish they could have a vehicle like this.

Thankfully, with Volvo ahead of the game in the safety department it’s only a matter of time before everyone else will follow suit. And that’s just better for all the drivers out there.

Granted you’re going to pay for it. And at just over 60-grand most will get spooked. Then you look at the name, find out that it’s loaded to the hilt and then you realize why.

After our time in the XC70 was up I had to ask my wife, “So, what did you think?”

“It’s still a wagon,” she said. “But, it’s not too bad.”

Score one for me.

Just 6,157 more and I’ll be half way to being even.
