V70 goes about its business unassumingly

The Volvo V70 was redesigned for 2008, but did anyone notice amid other exciting, younger new Volvo products like the C70 convertible and C30 coupe?

In fact, would anyone have noticed if the new V70 drove straight through their living room wall while they were watching American Idol?

It's not exactly the most exciting vehicle redesign to roll out in 2008, but to be fair, the V70 doesn't exist to makes pulses race with excitement. It does what it's supposed to do very well, and I'm sure most people can guess that it's not supposed to tear up tracks with 0-100 km/h times of 3.5 seconds.

The V70 is the straight-up people mover in the Volvo lineup. Whereas the XC70 is more adept at offroading and the V50 is a little smaller and more attuned to a younger generation, the V70 is all about moving people and stuff from one place to another - at least that's my impression of it.

For 2008, it gets a new look, with a rounder face that looks very similar to the S80 sedan. From the front, it has hints of gracefulness similar to the S80 and V50, but walk along the side and you can almost see the big slab of wood from station wagons of decades past.

There are a lot less choices this year in terms of trim levels - the only V70 available uses a naturally-aspirated 3.2-litre inline-six-cylinder engine, which is the first time the V70 gets a “six”. What customers do get is the choice of four options packages and a slew of available add-ons to help personalize the V70 to buyers' specifications. Many of the options, though, as well as the packages can make this vehicle quite pricey once everything is added up.

The V70 gets a lot bigger for the 2008 model year, but doesn't FEEL excessively large, which can only be a good thing. Rear seat occupants gain 48 mm. of legroom, while the two front seat occupants get 30 mm. more shoulder room. In non-numerical terms, all this means is that there's very little worry of bumped heads, sore bums or aching legs.

The best part about this extra room is that it makes the V70 one of the most versatile wagons on the road. All three rear seats fold down independently and flat with the rear cargo area, as does the front passenger seat. When all these seats are in the folded position, the load floor is positively ginormous. Adding things like a grocery bag holder is immensely awesome (if you can't get excited for grocery bag holders, what can you get excited for?).

Even the ‘floating' centrestack isn't as noticeable this year on the V70. It's there, but it isn't as cool as the one in the S80 or V50. That said, everything on the centre stack is very easy to use.

If you opt for many of the safety features like the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), they'll all conveniently be activated whenever you turn on the car. Turning them off is a matter of hitting a button located just in front of the shifter.

The aforementioned engine is up to most tasks, and is almost as quiet as a Lexus. You'll barely hear a peep out of it even when you drop the hammer right to the floor. Again though, I'm guessing anyone who buys a V70 isn't buying for the sounds it makes - more like for the sounds it doesn't make. The six-speed auto transmission is just as acceptable and unassuming as the engine.

The V70 quietly and staidly does everything it's supposed to do without raising any sort of a fuss and it's also as safe, comfortable and quiet a wagon as you'll find on the road. Try not to forget about it if you're in search of a wagon.

Editors Rating:

Fuel consumption
Goes far on a tank of gas and even with a larger engine this year, it doesn't guzzle.
Value for price
A wagon of this quality for a very fair price when you consider not only all the standard creature features, but the safety features as well.
Styling
Other Volvos have moved away from their boxy past, the V70 stays close to that era. Not quite ugly, but definitely not hot.
Comfort
Plenty of room for five, and add-ons like lumbar support and tilt/telescoping steering wheel.
Performance
The new engine does a fine job of getting the V70 moving, even when it's loaded up with people.
overall
A quiet, spacious, comfortable people-mover. Besides its ho-hum exterior, this does pretty much everything it's supposed to quite well.
