The rain in Spain falls mainly on the…Bentley?

Although the country is renowned for sunshine, the coming week promised to be cloudy, cold and wet. I took comfort knowing we would explore the vast Spanish countryside from behind the wheel of the Bentley Continental Flying Spur. A British built automobile steeped in tradition, the lads and ladies from Crewe know a thing or two about precipitation.

The Bentley Continental Flying Spur is without doubt one of the finest luxury sedans in the market. While there are several superb competitors from Mercedes-Benz and Maserati, to name a few, the Flying Spur is truly something special.

Power comes from a DOHC twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre 48-Valve, EFI W12 featuring an alloy block and cylinder heads. Performance is rated as follows: horsepower- 552 hp at 6,100 rpm; torque- 479 lb.-ft. at 1,600 rpm. Weighing a robust 2,940 kg, the Flying Spur accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds. Top speed is listed at 312 km/h.

Interior appointments include bull’s-eye air vents with organ stop controls, a Breitling clock and infotainment system. Front and rear seats are to die for and the double-stitched, 4-spoke steering wheel features shift paddles and multi-function controls. Driving the Flying Spur would be a vacation on its own.

Rain or no rain, Spain is a spectacular destination to visit. Every turn of the road reveals a new treasure waiting to be explored. Our route would see us start the week in Madrid; take a south-westerly tack towards Seville, eventually ending the tour at Marbella near the southernmost tip in the province of Malaga.

In a city filled with elegant places to stay, Hotel Ritz Madrid remains the top choice for celebrities and royalty alike. Located adjacent to the Prado and Thyssen Museums, cobblestone streets outside the hotel invite guests on a short walk to Retiro Park, the Palacio Real and more than a few superb restaurants serving tapas.

Legendary hotelier Cesar Ritz first opened the doors of his Madrid masterpiece in 1910 under the watchful eye of King Alfonso XIII. Back then, The Ritz offered guests unprecedented luxury featuring 4-5 bathrooms and one telephone on each floor.

Today, the hotel boasts classic and deluxe rooms, Junior and Deluxe Suites as well as one Royal Suite. The Goya Restaurant appeals to those in the mood for fine dining, cocktails are served in the Velasquez bar.

Leaving the busy streets of downtown Madrid, we programmed Seville into the DVD Satellite Navigation system and set our sights on this ancient city to the south. Blue sky broke through the pallor of grey clouds as we crossed rolling hills south of Madrid. Toledo and Cordoba retreated from our sight under brilliant sunshine.

The Bentley Continental Flying Spur shines brightest on the open road. At one point during the day, my only competitor for road supremacy was a Neptune Blue Bentley Continental GT. We sliced through the Spanish countryside in perfect synchronization, dodging in and out of slower traffic with ease.

Once in Seville, narrow city streets and an overstressed vehicle proximity detector lead to our one-night stopover at Casa Nº 7. Located in the famous Santa Cruz quarter, this award-winning boutique hotel is the perfect setting from which to bask in the classic ambience of the city.

Built in 1847, the former private residence features six uniquely decorated rooms and superior service. Every sight worth seeing in Seville is but a short stroll from the front door. Getting lost in the spider web of streets was easy. But there were enough outdoor cafes that no one seemed to care. Clear skies and warm temperatures made the short visit unforgettable.

Our drive to Marbella lasted four hours, sixty minutes longer than planned as we managed to go astray near Gibraltar. Utilizing the excellent Navi system, we worked our way through this seaside town, eventually arriving at our destination just as the sun was setting over green hills.

A member of The Ritz-Carlton family of hotels, The Hotel Villa Padierna offers a welcome breather from the non-stop hustle and bustle of Marbella. On a clear day, you can see the African coast from the balcony of your room. On a rainy day such as this, a good book, warm cup of coffee and a thick blanket was equally compelling.

Outside, the grand villa-style hotel is surrounded on three sides by the 18-hole Flamingo golf Course. Inside, it features 112 guest rooms and suites, numerous dining venues and a world-class Thermae Spa. Exceptional staff provided the highest level of service to ensure our visit to the new and old sections of Marbella was a five star experience.

Spain is a beautiful country of striking contrasts. To experience it first-hand in the Bentley Continental Flying Spur was the fitting compliment to a “fair lady” destination such as this.
