Should Suzuki be chastised or encouraged for making a vehicle as completely average as the Grand Vitara?

The answer, of course, is encouraged.

For anyone looking for a capable little sport-ute, it may seem too easy to completely overlook the Grand Vitara, but here's hoping that in this age of Internet-savvy car shoppers who have oodles of information at their fingertips, no auto or automaker should be overlooked, and Suzuki is no exception.

Suzuki may be known more for its motorcycle lineup than any of its passenger vehicles, but it's slowly but surely looking to change that with a small-but-ever-solidifying lineup that's really getting things right on a regular basis.

The future looks even brighter with the stunning Kizashi 3 concept hinting at a future of performance-minded Suzuki vehicles, but I digress.

The year 2004 saw a Suzuki lineup without the smaller, un-‘Grand' Vitara, but still featuring the Grand Vitara, albeit with a different look. Another redesign followed in 2006, a look that continues up to this year's model. It doesn't look wildly different from any other five-seat sport-cutes on the road right now but it doesn't look bad either. Every Grand Vitara gets fog lights, roof rails, 16-inch wheels and tires (17s on the top-of-the-line JLX) and the unmistakeable spare tire on the cargo door.

And like so many vehicles in this segment, the Grand Vitara is offroad capable, even if few people will ever take it over any bodies of water deeper than a puddle or through any terrain rougher than a pothole-covered city street. A four-mode four-wheel drive system allows the driver to set the Grand Vitara depending on the situation at hand, whether it's driving through an excess of snow or towing a (small) boat to the cottage.

And when it is traversing paved roads, the Grand Vitara is a comfortable thing to be sure. The leather seats in the JLX trim are soft and pleasant to the touch and there's lots of room up front. The rear seats feel soft yet sturdy, though the roof juts down slightly at one point between the front and rear seats when the optional moonroof is in place, so even average-sized passengers have to be careful not to bump their heads. The rear seats do recline though, which helps things out.

It's also worth noting how nice the rest of the interior is. It's tempting to say things look too plasticky after only a glance. Look closely though, and the smooth surfaces, two tone colour choice mixed with faux wood here and there, and brushed aluminum-look trim pieces really give it a quality appearance. And the gauges - man oh man, they use just about every colour of the rainbow on them. The focus is the vibrant bright white needles though, and the colours aren't gaudy at all.

Power in all Grand Vitaras is provided by a 2.7-litre V6 that produces a modest 185-horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. It's really the kind of vehicle that performs best at lower speeds (i.e., on city streets) while jutting in and out of traffic, because passing vehicles on the highway can cause a serious headache.

One thing you don't see on many SUVs nowadays is the side-hinged rear cargo door, and it's one thing I wish would become obsolete. Have you ever tried keeping one of those doors open on a windy day? Not fun, to say the least. And you'll have to constantly remember when backing in somewhere to leave a lot of space between the Grand Vitara and whatever is behind it (car, wall, or otherwise). That back door opens very wide, making it difficult to actually open all the way. There is a lot of room in the back of the Grand Vitara though, especially when you fold the 60/40 split rear seats up against the backs of the front seats.

No one will accuse it of treading on Acura territory when it comes to advanced electronic features, but this Suzuki isn't exactly about to be left behind in technology. The Grand Vitara is satellite radio-ready from the box and has available automatic climate control and ‘Smartpass' key, which lets you control everything in and on the car with the key never leaving your purse or pocket.

And remember that all of this stuff is available for a very affordable price. My tester had every feature mentioned in this article and a lot more for just a little over $30,000. You probably don't have to be told that this is definitely a strong selling point, but I'll tell you anyways: this is definitely a strong selling point.

The Grand Vitara may not turn heads, but it's a surprisingly adept utility vehicle that has a great starting - and even ending - price point.

Editors Rating:

About average for this size vehicle.
Value for price
For an all-wheel drive vehicle with this much stuff, the price is right.
Styling
I like these cutesy-yet-still-kinda-rugged-looking vehicles.
Comfort
Soft, supportive seats and great leather made for a comfortable combo.
Performance
Disappointingly underpowered for high speed passes, but peppy most of the time.
overall
Didn't jump out at me in any one way, but a solid vehicle in almost every facet.
