Cadillac CTS4 rocks

Cadillac has reshaped and revamped the CTS. The sporty luxury sedan that doesn't apologize for what it is — a high performance car packaged in a chiselled physique.

'It's been a long time since I rock-and-rolled.'

Yes, every once in a while you'll catch me living in the past.

Not to the point that you would call me a classic rock man. I'm far from it.

But years ago when Cadillac relaunched its lineup with the edgy design that was accepted with accolades, the Cadillac TV media campaign included the hard hittin' Led Zeppelin standard Rock and Roll. A true favourite to many.

At the time I drove my first Caddy tester I didn't have the luxury of having that song at my disposal.

That's not the case now.

In the mean time, Cadillac has reshaped and revamped the CTS. The sporty luxury sedan that doesn't apologize for what it is — a high performance car packaged in a chiselled physique.

The '08 CTS is more aggressive looking than the previous edition. Sitting on some sharp 18-inch wheels, it features a huge front grille, nice chrome accents and a more streamlined silhouette. The term 'looks good from every angle' is perfect for the CTS.

So, after loading up my good looking family, I popped in the Led Zeppelin CD into the 10-speaker, Bose 5.1 surround system and cranked the volume to 11.

'What is this (expletive deletion)?'

'If it's too loud, you're too old,' I remarked.

Then the complaints came flying.

'The door is way too high,' my wife exclaimed. 'I can't get my arm out the window.'

With my wife being 'under-tall' that's to be expected.

'And the kids can't see out the back windows either,' she said.

'I haven't heard them say anything,' I replied.

That's when my kids broke their silence. 'Daddy, turn the music off.'

I guess you can't please everyone. One day they'll get it.

The optional packages read like a wish-list to Santa Claus. There are so many packages on this CTS that I found myself stumbling across a new feature each day I drove it. Performance package adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, sport suspension performance braking, adaptive Xenon HID headlamps with washers and front fog lamps. Comfort and convenience package features ventilated front seats, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, remote start, universal home remote, split folding rear seat and rear parking assist.

Ok. You get the point. It's got a lot of goodies. A couple things I really liked was the navigation system that pops up from the dash (and when not in use rolls back down) and the huge sunroof (and I mean huge).

According to GM, the glass covers 75 percent of the roof. The kids got a big thrill seeing the sky right over their heads, which made the game of 'I spy with my little eye' even better for them. Most of the things they spied I could never figure out.

Luxury aside, the CTS4 is all about performance. It comes equipped with a sticky all-wheel-drive system that plants the wheels nicely to the ground. The system splits power 25/75 to the rear wheels and, if needed, can apply 100 percent of power to the front wheels.

Making those wheels go is a powerful 3.6-litre V6 that pounds out 304 ponies and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. The growl that comes out front under the hood and exits through the dual exhaust sends chills up and down your spine.

As usual, the kids just wanted to go faster than all the other cars on the road, but when you're playing dad, you have to be responsible, 'Sorry kids, that would be speeding and daddy would get a ticket.'

'Go faster anyway!'

See? Now they got it.

Now, where's that Led Zeppelin? 'Ooh, yeah! Ooh-ooh, yeah!'

Of course, if you don't feel some exhilaration when you're behind the wheel of this machine, you probably need to check your pulse. Yup, I'm still very much alive.

Now, let's get the Led out.
