Bavarian Cream is my favorite

I love coffee! In fact, a morning without coffee is like a day without jeans. The feeling is comfortable for a few hours while relaxing at home, but when it’s time to head out into the world and make a difference, give me a jolt of java and a pair of blue denims any day.

Whenever possible, assuming I have been watching what I eat for the previous few days, I also enjoy a Bavarian Cream filled donut. Something about the chocolate and squishy custard center makes the coffee taste that much more appealing.

The all-new 2008 Audi A5 is a Bavarian dream machine filled with a velvety interior sure to put a smile on your face faster than any goo-filled, deep-fried pocket of dough. If take-out ordering was an option for buying a new car, the line-up at the Audi dealership would stretch around the block.

Life is good at Audi these days and to celebrate it has recently introduced a feast of delectable treats sure to make an auto-lover salivate. The Audi R8 and S5 are two of the finest sport coupes available anywhere, at any price. But it is the A5 coupe and A4 sedan that will have the biggest positive impact on the corporate waistline.

I landed in Munich, in Germany’s largest geographical state of Bavaria, to spend several days touring the homeland around the company’s hometown of Ingolstadt, where Audis rule the road. It didn’t matter where I traveled; every second vehicle featured the four overlapping rings symbolizing the former Auto Union (the amalgamation in 1932 of four German marques - Horch, Audi, DKW and Wanderer).

The new 2008 Audi A5 is equipped with a DOHC direct injection V6 engine. Mounted longitudinally, it develops 265 hp @ 6,500 rpm and 243 lb.-ft of torque @ 3,250-5,000 rpm. Power delivery is smooth, with speeds reaching triple figures in 5.8 seconds. Twice that, or 200 km/h for those still thinking about donuts, is maintained with little effort.

Of course, driving in excess of 100 km/h is prohibited in Canada, but not so on the Autobahns of Germany. Here, the biggest deterrent to speed is the will of the driver to keep up with the Porsches, BMWs and Audi S4s plying the outer lane on a regular basis.

My home-away-from-home for this destination would be the renowned Mandarin-Oriental, Munich. Located in the “Old Town” district, it is ranked as one the “Best Hotels of the World” for 2007 by Travel + Leisure Magazine.

A perennial favorite of celebrities and dignitaries, it first opened in 1880 as the Johann Kilian Stützel’s Ballhaus. Recent renovations to the 48 guest rooms and 25 suites showcase the exquisite design of this late 19th Century building. Seven floors define the interior space of the hotel, while two massive grand staircases bookend the main lobby.

Wide hallways covered with thick, rich carpet lead to rooms featuring down-filled king-size beds, oversized marble baths and remote controlled LCD TVs. Grand views of Munich’s majestic spires are visible through large windows overlooking the city.

Munich is a city with so much to see and do, it is almost impossible to know where to start. Museums, the Opera house and the finest shops in town are all within easy walking distance of the hotel. The famous Hofbräuhaus and Glockenspiel at Marienplatz are mere steps away.

Those seeking a luxurious dinner need look no further than 3-time Michelin Star winner Restaurant Mark’s. Casual fair is served at the Mandarin Bar or special orders can be provided by the heated rooftop pool from May to October.

Cobblestone streets and a nearby Starbucks drew my attention for several hours, but eventually the call of the 2008 Audi A5 was too strong to resist. As the sun set, I knew it was time to experience the “other” reason many car-lovers long to visit the Bavarian countryside.

The 2008 Audi A5 features a new transaxle design that places the differential ahead of the clutch or torque converter. This allows the front axle centerline to be located just behind the engine, which in turn provides superior handling.

Equipped with 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels and 245/40 all-season radial tires, the quattro-drive Audi A5 grips asphalt like an overturned chocolate donut sticks to wax paper. One of my favorite experiences on the Autobahn was traveling with other like-minded drivers in groups of five and six vehicles. Sometimes taking the lead, occasionally holding back, the kilometers flew by as I completely immersed myself in the experience of legal speed.

Inside, the Audi A5 provides five-star accommodations. Seats are supportive and firm, with ample adjustment to suit occupants of all sizes. Servotronic vehicle speed-sensitive power steering is taut and perfectly weighted for high-speed manoeuvres. A superb navigation system was included with my vehicle and once I figured out how to switch from German to English, trekking from town to town was easy.

A trip through Bavaria is a delicacy each of us should experience at least once in a lifetime. To travel the countryside in a German original such as the 2008 Audi A5 can only be described as icing on the cake.
