Down by the Bay

The wind lashed across Fisherman’s Wharf. It sent a chill down my spine that no bowl of steaming clam chowder could abate. When fog rolls in off the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco is a cold place to be.

A gull cried overhead as sunlight fractured the cloud cover, illuminating the previously dark weathered planks on which we stood. Wind still whipped my coat, but this time the air was warm and my mood changed instantly. In the distance, a large tanker headed for deeper water, passing out of sight to places unknown. Just as the hotel concierge had promised, this day would be perfect after all.

San Francisco is a temperamental lady. Certain not to grasp what she will send your way from one moment to the next, to miss the energy of her existence would be a catastrophic mistake.

Not only is the weather impulsive, geographic changes are equally abrupt. Near the wharf, roads are flat as a pancake, stretching for kilometres along an endless succession of piers. A traditional trolley ride is still one of the best ways to get around. Depart from the wharf by way of Van Ness Avenue and the hills just keep coming. Parking your vehicle with the wheels pointed at the curb isn’t just an option, here it’s a necessity.

A centerpiece on the bay area hotel scene, Campton Place Hotel rises at the outer edge of Union Square on Stockton Street. The cities best shopping is a mere block away. Featuring 110 rooms and suites, the century old building has been painstakingly turned into a boutique hotel with grand aspirations.

Inside, spacious rooms are warm and inviting. Pearwood panels line the hallway as double sliding French doors separate carpet from the ceramic tiled bathroom. Walls are toned in soft, neutral colours, the soothing palette a reminder this is your place to unwind. High-speed Internet access, large screen TVs and Egyptian linens complete the luxury look. Such ideal surroundings would be my personal retreat for the next few days.

The Maserati GranTurismo is the perfect companion for a city such as San Francisco. “Excellence Through Passion” is the company mantra and the GranTurismo exudes excitement from all angles.

Elegant design lines belie the ripped athletic spirit waiting to be unleashed. Even in a celebrity rich city such as this, men and women take note of your passing, basking in the poignant sound of a 90-degree Ferrari-built V8. On tap is 405 hp at 7,100 rpm. Torque is rated as 332 lb.-ft at 4,750 rpm.

GT driving is what separates Maserati from other high-powered players in the market. It is a wonderful coupe to drive fast or slow. Whether your destination is across town or 3,000 km on the other side of the continent, the GranTurismo inspires you to take the next corner and see what awaits.

San Francisco is filled with trolley tracks, medians and one way streets. A city bounded on three sides by water, not all streets are covered with perfect asphalt. To combat tight corners and less-than-ideal road conditions, the Pininfarina designed body rides on a fully independent suspension. Our vehicle featured the optional electronically controlled Skyhook suspension. Weight distribution is near perfect; 49 front/51 rear.

Ride quality is superb; it feels as though you are jogging on the perfect set of running shoes. Driving around town, bumps are quickly forgotten. Standard 19-inch alloy wheels are outfitted with Pirelli P-Zero tires or in our case high performance Bridgestone Potenzas.

Significant optional accessories include 20-inch BirdCage wheels, Rosso colour brake callipers, tone-on-tone or contrasting seat stitching, Bose premium sound and heated seats with driver’s side memory.

Arriving back at Campton Place Hotel, we unloaded our cache of valuables from a morning of souvenir shopping. Much like Niagara Falls, San Francisco is a wonderful place to find unique mementos including t-shirts and trinkets of all kinds. Alcatraz has never been so well represented.

Dinner was served in the award-winning Campton Place Restaurant. Featuring fine French cuisine that blends Mediterranean flare with seasonally fresh California ingredients, we enjoyed the refined atmosphere of its intimate setting. An extensive wine and dessert list topped off the perfect dining experience.

Early next morning, valet parking delivered the GranTurismo to the front doors and reluctantly handed over the keys. A small, but inquisitive group paid homage to Maserati as I purposely crackled the exhaust note downshifting into second gear. Paddle shifters make it easy to engage each gear and keep a crowd happy.

Driving twenty minutes through the city, after a series of sweeping twists and turns we reached Twin Peaks. The 360-view of San Francisco was matched only by the winding assent in the Maserati GranTurismo. A second trip confirmed my suspicion. To fully experience a tour of the renowned City by the Bay, a legendary Maserati is the only way to go.
