Mirror, Mirror on the Lake

The “Miracle on Ice” is burned into the minds of many sports fans as one of the greatest achievements in U.S. sports history. Not only did it pit the superior USSR hockey team against a vastly outgunned opponent in Team USA, but the showdown took place at a time in history when the Olympics represented the pinnacle for amateur athletics.

To this day, the names of Jim Craig, Mike Eruzione and the late Herb Brooks spur instant memories of this David versus Goliath clash at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York.

Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa is situated a mere ten minutes stroll from the famed Olympic Center arena where the event took place. To the north, Lake Placid sits at an elevation of 1,858 feet. Southward from the resort, Saranac Lake provides a summertime haven for the rich and famous of upstate New York.

Opened originally in 1924, a total of 100 guest rooms including 31 suites and seven buildings define the AAA Four Diamond Award winning resort. Contained within the seven acre property is a 60-foot lap pool, heated outdoor pool, private beach with paddle boats, kayaks and tennis court. In the winter, the staff of 200 builds a private skating rink on Mirror Lake, a fitting compliment to this two-time host of the Winter Olympic Games.

A 4.2 kilometre stroll around Mirror Lake offers the perfect medium for exercising after an elegant dinner at The View Restaurant, one of three on the property. The well lit pathway radiates with the glow of a champion’s bygone era, while making available the sights and shops of modern, small town America.

To visit a destination such as Lake Placid, it seemed fitting to drive what many consider an underdog in the Crossover Utility Vehicle market. While it may seem odd to discuss a General Motors vehicle in this way, it is a reality. The power players in today’s CUV segment include Toyota, Honda, Acura and Audi to name a few. The Buick Enclave offers a North American alternative, with the equipment and on-road presence to win when you least expect it.

Power comes in the form of a 275 hp 3.6L V6 with variable valve timing. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, torque is equally impressive; 251 @ 3200 rpm. In a world where every penny counts, the 2008 Buick Enclave runs on regular unleaded gasoline.

Hydraulic rack-and-pinion with variable effort power steering highlights excellent drive characteristics. Our CXL model was fitted with optional AWD, and included standard StabiliTrak with 19-inch machined aluminum wheels. Stopping power is provided by 4-wheel disc brakes with 4-wheel ABS and dynamic rear proportioning (DRP).

Imperfections in the road pass by in a customary Buick way. The Enclave is a midsize-large vehicle, so it floats more than its competitors, but never feels out of control. In fact, when pushing the Enclave for several hundred kilometres on beautiful two-lane highways winding towards Lake Placid, the Enclave delivered a driving experience equal to any in this segment.

Inside, the 2008 Buick Enclave CXL presents a driver and six passenger experience par excellence. Chrome accents glisten on the steering wheel and round analogue clock mounted above the navigation/stereo LCD screen. Wood graces the dash, front and rear center console, steering wheel top and bottom and door panels. Seating is plush, roomy and well put together.

Arriving relaxed at Mirror Lake Inn after a seven hour drive, the first order of business was to settle in at the new Colonial House accommodations. Situated on the shores of the lake, each room features cathedral ceilings, stone fireplaces, thick carpeting and an oversized bathroom with in-floor heating.

Recreation opportunities abound in the area. Six million acres of wilderness surround the resort, with hiking, biking, rock climbing and all manner of water sports activities in close proximity. Championship golf is offered at nearby Whiteface Club. Ranked sixth in New York state by Golfweek magazine in 2005, the Adirondack Mountains offer the perfect backdrop for this challenging, well groomed course.

A large walkout porch offered the ideal location to soak in the vibrant atmosphere surrounding Mirror Lake. Adirondack chairs strategically placed on the dock beckoned our arrival and the next few hours were spent watching a perfect day come to a close. Across the water, music and laughter could be heard as a stiff daytime breeze abated and the lake assumed the glassy appearance inspiring its name. For the underdog in all of us, Lake Placid feels like home.
