Acura RL reaches Elite status

Aaaah ... to be one of the elite.

The top of your game ... the go-to guy ... the one who demands respect at all times.

To maintain my elite status at home all I have to do is correctly name off all The Wiggles and every princess ever to appear in a Disney movie.

I still can't name off all those darn princesses. But with a simple distraction of 'Hey kids, let's go for a drive.' I can manage to stave off the fury of my daughter for one more day.

Acura has come out with its own 'Elite' car -- the 2008 Acura RL Elite.

The mid-sized RL sedan is the flagship of the Acura lineup and may not stir too many emotions at first glance but as a package, the RL has everything a rich man, or poor auto writer, could ever want.

The exterior design is sleek and sophisticated and won't scare off too many people with some weird concept. After all, people shouldn't be afraid of their cars.

Cars are your friends. And this just may be one of the friendliest for drivers and passengers alike.

Inside, the black leather receives a little sparkle with brushed silver accents and a little warmth with genuine curly maple wood trim — an Elite package feature.

Adding a little more warmth and comfort are the heated and cooled ventilated front seats. Perfect for summer when dad needs to keep cool and his lovely wife still thinks that it’s 40 below. Although I did not use the heat for myself, I did find the heated passenger seat of great use when I picked up pizza for supper.

‘Yay, daddy!’ the kids said. ‘Pizza!’

Dad’s the weekend hero again.

'O.K. kids, let's listen to dad's tunes!'

The silence is deafening ... dad's a zero.

Too bad, because the 10-speaker Bose audio system is a real treat. With the added in-dash six-disc CD/DVD/MP3/WMA changer and MP3 player jack, you have every option available to stimulate your ears.

Another nifty feature includes a power rear window screen, which I popped up to shield the tops of my kids' heads from the blazing sun. They may not fully appreciate it now, but anything is better than two kids complaining of hot head.

The RL packs a punch with a 290 horsepower V6 engine and puts good use to the Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive. The combination may not be overly fast, but you won't be racing at the local drag strip anyway.

The RL doesn't dip or dive and keeps the rubber to the road and manages to be seriously sporty when other cars may have given up the fight.

Technologically fun gadgets include driver and passenger illuminated door handles, headlight washer system and a navigation system with backup camera.

The Elite package also adds an active front lighting system, adaptive cruise control and collision mitigation braking system.

A keyless entry system is also standard, which is great when all you have to do is touch the door handle and the car unlocks the doors (press a dot on the handle to lock the doors).

The only time it became an annoyance was at the car wash when I washed the RL with a wand sprayer. When I went over the door handles the RL would unlock and lock over and over again.

A minor issue, but I guess if you can afford a car like this you may have 'people' who wash and detail the car for you. Then they can deal with it.

I will probably never be a rich man and a car like the RL will definitely be out of my grasp for most of the years of my life. However, I can appreciate the RL for what it is: a luxurious car that will pamper you and beg you to play the lottery. Maybe even win it.

Even if you only use the heating feature in the passenger seat to keep your pizza warm.

At least the kids will be happy dinner won't be cold.
