Forester keeps it simple

In the years when cute-utes and funky crossovers are the hot commodity, Subaru brings out its new Forester and keeps things simple.

The overall design is pretty straightforward and doesn't have any weird design cues that will scare away potential buyers.

The Forester has great ground clearance and yet sits low enough to the ground for the kids to climb in and the entire package is larger than the previous model.

That's all good. Although, I kind of liked the edgier styling of the old Subaru lineup.

Heck, when my wife says that the latest test drive isn't ugly, that's even better. Of course, she still just thought the Forester was a wagon. While I had to quell those concerns, she did find that there was a decent amount of room for everyone and everything that you might need to haul around.

The cargo area is plenty huge and comes with a removable rubber cover that makes cleanups a breeze. You just never know what's going to break in the latest oversized grocery trip.

There are also lots of little hooks for bags or dry-cleaned items that you don't want to get all messed up. If your cargo allows, you can use the good old retractable privacy cover to hide all your items.

With the kids in tow, we did not use the 60/40 spilt rear seats, but it is nice to know you've got extra room for extra large items, if you need it.

The rear seats can also recline to give rear passengers a little more comfort.

My rear seat crew did love the large power sun roof. Hey, who doesn't like to let the sunshine in?

The interior design isn't scary either. Although, not as progressive as the Tribeca, the layout is simple, with clean lines and nice wood trim and brushed silver accents.

The audio system features a six CD combo with upgraded speakers and certainly makes a nice impression for the neighbours. With the music blaring and the sunroof open, at least they'll know when you come home.

Leather covers the seats, steering wheel and shifter knob, all providing a nice touch of comfort.

Some other nice features include 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, chrome door handles, stainless steel rear step pad, heated front seats, power heated door mirrors and a wiper de-icer.

Airbags can fill up the cabin at a moments notice as well with driver and front passenger front and side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags.

Under the hood is a tightly packaged 2.5-litre horizontally opposed four cylinder engine. It's by no means a burner at 170 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque, but it will get the job done.

I would have liked a little turbo action for a little more oomph, but the turbo is only available on the XT Limited model.

My loss.

One thing that isn't missing is the Subaru Symmetrical all-wheel drive. Standard in all Subaru models, this system makes driving just a little more fun and turns what should be just an everyday vehicle into a tight turning, nimble joy machine. Add in the Vehicle Dynamics Control system to maintain overall stability to the vehicle and the Traction Control System to keep power to the right wheels at all times.

The Forester provides a decent ride with very little bounce as well. This vehicle would be great for extended trips to destinations unknown.

While the Forester's design won't blow anyone away, the functional items in this SUV really make it stand out.

There's nothing boring about that.
