Go small and go home

I'm digging small cars lately.

That could be the consensus of most drivers on the road now.

With gas prices as high as they are, finding an alternative mode of transportation from your everyday monster truck has never been better for consumers.

Just to let you know ... small cars have always been here; you just couldn't see them over the hood of that truck you drive.

One of the sharper looking numbers out there might just be the Saturn Astra.

An Opel import, the Astra continues the style revolution over at Saturn.

Even with four doors — five if you count the hatch — it's still attractive and sporty.

The real surprise could be the standard features in the Astra, including a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, tire pressure monitoring system, remote keyless entry, power-adjustable heated side mirrors and OnStar (of course).

The XR adds fog lamps, air, seven-speaker sound system with CD and MP3 playback, fabric upgrade and a Driver Information Centre. Not too shabby.

The all black interior also has touches of silver metallic trim that breaks up the monotone fun.

There's a good amount of room for the family, although being a small car, rear seating space can seem a little tight. My kids didn't complain though. They are easy to please when the latest test drive is red.

If that's all they need, I'm all for it.

Front passengers have a decent amount of room as well and with four-way adjustments on the seat and the aforementioned tilt/telescopic steering wheel, the driver is able to find a good seating position with ease.

A cool optional feature is the large dual-panel power sunroof that nearly extends the length of the roofline and provides a welcome distraction for the kids, when they can see the clouds in the sky and the bird droppings that happen to hit the car.

Rear cargo room is decent for trips to the grocery store and also comes with a hard cargo cover that lifts up when the rear hatch opens.

Cargo space can also be expanded when you fold down the 60/40 split rear seats.

Interior safety includes active head restraints, dual-stage front airbags, side curtain airbags and side airbags.

Getting the Astra moving is the job of a peppy 1.8-litre engine that puts out 138 horsepower and 125 lb.-ft. of torque. The Ecotec engine can be a little noisy when pushed, but you just turn up the volume on your favourite music.

Astra is not a sports car by any means, but it doesn't mean it can't be fun to drive. It handles pretty well and maintains all four wheels on the road without too much body roll.

The braking system is a four-wheel disc setup with ABS.

For a little car, Astra has a lot to offer. It's packed with so many useful features you truck drivers might just wonder why you don't drive one of these to work instead.

Heck, I wonder as well.
