Shopping trips were never so cool

Getting from point A to point B can become a tedious task — especially if you travel to the same place everyday of the week.

Although my travel time lasts about five minutes, I feel sorry for those who have to boot it across town. My wife use to do that and she has said on many occasions, never again.

So, when the weekend comes and you still have things to do, you don't want to be driving around in something boring. The HHR SS will do the trick.

Now, I know what you're thinking —the HHR? That crazy retro wagon thingy? My thoughts exactly, until I got behind the wheel. More on that later.

The SS edition of the HHR is a sporty step up from the everyday HHR - hunkered low to the ground; strutting around on some 18-inch polished aluminum wheels and low profile rubber; large fender flares adding to the muscular stance - nice!

Not so much for my wife, who really didn't like the look of the HHR from the outside and the inside didn't change her mind, with red inserts on the seats and door panels. Cheesy for some, cool for others. My kids thought the red inserts on the rear seats were the best thing since the invention of child seat cup holders. They impress easily.

The premium cloth seating surfaces have an ultra-suede feel and again the kids thought being able to write their names with their fingers on the seats was the best thing since ... well ... the red inserts. And really, what's wrong with your kids perfecting their ABCs?

SS embroidery is a nice touch, for those who can't remember what their driving. Or how to make an 'S'.

Windows are a little small and take some getting use to, especially when handing money out at the local drive-thru.

But the cargo room is great. The rear hatch opens wide and because of the low ride height, it's a breeze to load up with gear. The 60/40 split rear seats are a good addition, but to get the seats to sit flat takes some front seat manoeuvring.

A sound and sun package adds a power sliding glass roof, six-CD changer and a 260-watt seven-speaker audio system with subwoofer. Satellite radio is also available.

On the safety side, you'll find dual stage front airbags and optional head curtain side-impact airbags. Why optional? Far as I'm concerned, every car that has four doors should have side curtain airbags standard.

Under the large hood you'll find a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-banger. It doesn't look like much at first glance, but this baby can hammer out 260 horsepower. Shifting is handled by a Getrag five-speed manual transmission. It's not really a sporty shifter, but it does the job.

The performance suspension gives the driver a little more feel for the road, but the HHR doesn't feel too choppy and shouldn't pose too much discomfort for any passengers you have aboard.

The funny thing is this HHR doesn't feel like it's struggling at all. It seems to have a good balance between weight and power. And when you add the cargo room, the HHR SS is a real winner. Even if my wife hates it.

Oh, well. The kids and I had some great fun.
