Cleaning up in the 4WD wagon segment

The automotive industry is probably one of the few places where cleanliness sits so high atop the list of redeeming qualities to describe a product.

Think about it. How often are you deciding on where to eat with some friends and you hear someone say “We should really go to this new restaurant by my house - it’s spotless!”

Or when being introduced to a member of the opposite sex. Does the conversation ever start like this: “I really want to introduce you to this girl I know - she’s really clean!”

With cars, though, there’s no doubt that people are slowly but surely thinking more and more about how that vehicle they’re thinking of buying may affect the environment.

That said, it’s presumably safe to assume that people who are thinking of buying something like a hybrid are doing so more to protect the money in their wallet, than the air they breathe.

When looking at Subaru specifically, it’s an interesting entity to be sure. While other Japanese automakers like Toyota and Honda lead the way in hybrid technology, Subaru currently has no hybrids in its lineup and reportedly has no plans for any in the near future.

That doesn’t mean it doesn’t want to ride the wave of environmentalism though, as proven by its new line of clean-burning PZEVs - Partial Zero Emissions Vehicles. Subaru says that compared to an average new vehicle, a PZEV has 90 percent cleaner emissions.

For 2009, Subaru has released the Legacy and Outback PZEV models, of which we recently tested a snow white Legacy wagon.

Thing is, if you read past all the environmental stuff, you’ll see two other things worth noting. First - this wagon uses a modified version of Subaru’s excellent 2.5-litre four-cylinder Boxer engine that gets improved fuel economy thanks to its use of variable valve timing. Second - ‘PZEV’ is also another way to spell ‘base’, as in, these will now be the base models in their respective lineups. The Legacy wagon we tested, with no options, still came well-equipped for a shade under $30,000. A fantastic price, and it makes calling this the ‘base’ seem somehow so very wrong.

The Legacy PZEV wagon otherwise is a true-blue Subaru (heh heh) that carries all the traits of other vehicles in the automaker’s lineup we’ve always liked. It has a fantastic interior that looks and feels upscale without resorting to things like faux wood or items that could bump up the price (such as suede seats). Cargo space is also top-notch. The 60/40 split rear seats fold flat, adding even more room to an already spacious rear cargo area. The floor is carpeted but an optional anti-slip mat or cargo area tray can be had for minimal cost. Even without them, though, there are still plenty of cargo tie-down and grocery bag hooks to keep things from rolling around the large area.

The Legacy wagon rides quite nicely over any type of road (we didn’t exactly go offroading with it) and almost always stays composed, thanks in no small part - along with every other Subaru - standard all-wheel drive. It actually handles quite well, with some very tight, direct steering. It sits closer to the ground than its Outback sibling and it should be easy to notice the difference between the two if you give them both a test drive. If you opt to mate the engine to a four-speed automatic transmission, you’ll even get a sequential mode. It isn’t exactly earth-shattering, but it’s a nice little bonus that should help with fuel-economy, even if only a little bit.

Besides the cool stuff that comes standard like heated front seats, CD-player, integrated side mirror LED turn signals, cruise control and eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, all Legacys, including the PZEV wagon, get their fair share of standard safety features. Six airbags, including two side curtains, are one of many passive safety features, and though traction control isn’t available on the PZEV models, the aforementioned all-wheel drive should keep most drivers on the road.

Try not to focus too much on how environmentally-friendly the Legacy PZEV wagon is. It’s important, but you don’t want to miss out on all the other things that make this such a great vehicle.
