Aiding future generations

So here we are.

The economy is going in the tank and the dollar is dropping as well. On the good side, gas is finally staying under a buck a litre ... for the time being.

While you may be able to feel less concerned with driving around to destinations unknown, you'll still want to hold on to any extra change you may be saving on gas. We could be in for a long haul.

With that in mind, this is not the time to become less concerned for our environment; in fact we should embrace it. And with the numerous hybrid vehicles out there your options have never been better.

Search for a used Honda Civic

The Civic Hybrid is just one of those cars.

Getting things moving is a 1.3-litre i-VTEC four cylinder engine with Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) — electric motor, for us simple people. The entire configuration is mated to a continuously variable transmission and is able to push out 93 horsepower and 89 lb.-ft. of torque. It's all good just getting from point A to point B, but don't expect to outdrag anyone off the line. The Civic Hybrid takes its own sweet time getting up to speed, but once you're moving there isn't much of an issue. Even loaded up with five adults this hybrid doesn't feel any less sluggish — that's good too.

There are enough seat belts for five, but unless your passengers are truly like family — even that's a stretch — it's best to have just two passengers in the back.

Space is decent for a family of four — seats are comfy and the cloth surfaces in this Civic reminded me of a super soft blanket.

The interior is just like the rest of the Civic lineup with only the addition of the dual-stage gauge display, that shows the battery use, brake charging and will even let you know when you stop at a red light that the engine has shut off.

That sensation brings up the idea the Civic has stalled, but lift your foot off the brake and the gas engine kicks in again and you’re off.

My wife was not a fan and wished the transition was a little less noticeable.

I've always liked the look of this Civic, but could Honda do something about the Frisbee-style wheel covers?

The Honda Civic Hybrid comes in as a decent base, with a few available options; ours got equipped with an auxiliary jack for the good old iPod.

Safety is not overlooked in this car with dual stage front airbags, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags, four-wheel brakes with ABS and electronic brake distribution and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control.

The Honda Civic Hybrid is a no nonsense vehicle that offers room for your family or maybe even your car pool buddies — what a concept. It offers good fuel economy, ultra low emissions and all of the 'Civicness' that comes with it, but at a trade off of price.

The base Civic starts at just under $17,000, but the Hybrid starts at just over $26,000; a difference of nine grand.

Ouch.

Most people are aware they're going to pay a premium for a hybrid and no, they won't make up the cost difference in fuel savings for a very long time, but that's not the point.

If you want to make an impression that you're trying to make a difference for the future and your kids' future, then be the responsible one and start saving now.

That's a life lesson from which your kids will always benefit.
