Catching up with an old friend

Back in the mid-’90s, gas was 62 cents a litre, Chretien was Prime Minister, and the Chevrolet Silverado was the second-best selling vehicle in North America.

My horse-crazy friends and I spent all our spare time (and most of our spare income) travelling to cross-country events - hurtling over fences and ditches at breakneck speed. I lived for those weekends with my equine partner, a cocky, Belgian/Quarter-horse cross called Redford who carried himself like a Roman war horse.

It was wild and exhilarating, and sensible thoughts of my own mortality (or saving for the future) rarely entered my head.

How things change.

The new millennium brought enforced practicality, as, newly single, with a mortgage to pay - I made the emotionally wrenching decision to part with my beloved Redford.

For most of this decade - he’s been an integral part of the local Riding for Disabled Program (PARD) - with the understanding that he return to me when his working days were over.

That day arrived early this October.

Where to move him was a no-brainer. My sister’s horse farm outside of Belleville Ontario is a small slice of heaven - green meadows, mixed forest and a menagerie of brood mares, ponies and yearling racehorses - the perfect place for my 22 year old boy to retire in equine luxury. We should all be so lucky.

How to move him involved a bit more planning. PARD had graciously offered its trailer; all I needed was a truck to pull it. Through years spent trucking across the province with my jumping, racing and hunting friends I knew that the hands-down favourite towing vehicle of the horsey set was the Chevy Silverado.

A call to GM secured a navy blue 2008 1500 LT 4WD Crew Cab complete with towing package, and we were good to go.

Riding shotgun was Kathy Carruthers - Equine Director for the PARD program to see “Red” off on his retirement. A long-time truck owner, Kathy commented on the attractive and comfortable interior of the Silverado. The LT model comes with what’s called the “Pure Pickup” interior treatment (while LTZ models receive the upscale “Luxury” package). Nonetheless, despite being sturdy, straightforward and functional, the cockpit, with its contrasting charcoal and cream dash and soft velour upholstery was appealing as well.

Materials used inside are of good quality, and fit well with tight gaps. Switchgear and door handles are large and simple, and easy to operate with gloves. The rear seats can be flipped up to accommodate extra cargo on the flat, rubber-lined floor - and rear doors open a full 170 degrees on extended models.

The seats are firm, yet supportive and comfortable. The same could be said for the ride quality - although quite firm, all bumps and vibrations are well damped. Up front is a coil-over-shock setup; out back, splayed rear shocks help to smooth the ride when the box is empty.

Stopping half-way for a coffee break, we both remarked on the Silverado’s quiet comfort and, checking to see how Redford was faring, it was plain that he agreed as he barely lifted his head from his hay bag.

The lack of vibration and sound absorption is achieved through a number of methods; the windshield is raked 50 degrees for improved aerodynamics and less wind resistance. The box itself, instead of having an inner and outer shell welded together, is stamped from one continuous piece of steel. There’s extensive use of noise damping materials.

For such a big vehicle, steering is sharp and nicely communicative. The rack and pinion system is mounted to the engine cradle, providing extra stability and enhanced road feedback.

There are an astounding eight engine choices for the Silverado.

My tester came with a 5.3 litre V8 that, with a towing capacity of up to 8,300 lbs (3,765 kg), was equal to the task at hand. It had to work at it though.

Mated to a four-speed Hydramatic transmission - and with a full load (such as my 1300 lb boy + trailer at roughly 3300 lbs.) the truck was slow to shift. A couple more gears would not only increase its towing ability, but would improve fuel economy too.

We all disembarked at our destination unruffled and refreshed, Redford stepping off the trailer with head up and a spring in his step. It was a happy, yet poignant moment as I reflected on how much things had changed in the last dozen years. Redford at 22 was a long way from taking five foot fences in stride, sciatica and failing eyesight are my daily companions, and our borrowed Chevy truck - no longer the second best selling vehicle on the continent, but struggling for survival.

But looking at the gleam in my old friend’s eye - I realized there was still a lot of life left in the old boy. We’d just learn to adapt.
