Large Lexus proves big is beautiful

If you’re one of those people who figure big is beautiful, Lexus has an eyeful for you in the 2009 Lexus LX 570.

There’s no doubt this flagship SUV is big. It weighs in at 5,564 lb., so it’s far from svelte. The good thing about being beefy is space...lots of it – for arms, legs, feet, hips, shoulders and heads. Six sets of them (seven if you want to put somebody in the middle of the second row, but the flip down centre armrest isn’t a comfy spot).

A word of caution, though: The rearmost pair should be the most agile of the group because the third row perches can be a bit of a climb, especially in a vehicle sporting 20-inch wheels. Rather than fold down, the split third row seats fold upward toward the sides of the vehicle. While simple to operate, they take a chunk out of the cargo area.

A test vehicle from Lexus Canada came with a Premium package, the middle position of the line-up, which joins the base model and Ultra Premium edition.

Once you get past the sheer size of this thing, the environment is downright elegant. Leather and wood everywhere, power everything, heated – and cooled – front seats and heat for the second row riders.

The driver grips a leather and wood multi-function steering wheel and looks at big, bright instruments. At the top of the centre stack is a large screen for the navigation system and backup camera.

No matter which level you choose, under the hood is a 5.7-litre V8 that pushes out 383 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 403 lb.-ft. of torque at just 3,600 rpm. Power gets to the full-time four-wheel drive system through a six-speed automatic transmission.

It’s a lot of power, and although this Lexus is no slug, the muscle is needed to get all that weight moving.

It also means plenty of visits to the filling station to top up on premium fuel. Four months ago, that would be a real financial burden, but the current pump price makes the visit a little more palatable.

Around town, I find the progressive rate power steering is somewhat heavy and manoeuvring into a single spot in a mall parking lot can be a chore.

Braking is handled by four-wheel discs with multi-terrain ABS along with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist. They work extremely well, but you have to remember to get those binders into action a bit sooner, especially when driving on icy roads, because this is a biiiggg brute and momentum will take a bit longer to overcome.

The test vehicle came with top-notch winter tires, giving it exceptional traction. The standard active traction control (A-TRAC) rarely needed to go to work and in the course of a week, the vehicle stability control (VSC) was heard from just once, and that was on a patch of slick black ice.

Difficult terrain holds no terror for this ute, which can take you pretty much anywhere you want to go thanks to 8.5 inches of clearance and electronic aids like downhill assist control (DAC), hill-start assist control (HAC). Crawl control helps you get out of tight spots where you don’t want to put too much pressure on the accelerator. Engine and transfer case are protected by skid plates.

I never had the LX 570 on any off-road excursions, in fact, winter came on with a vengeance during my test time: snow, wind, icy roads and temperatures in the -27C range.

Even after sitting out for a couple of days in that frigid atmosphere, the engine fired up the instant I pushed the starter button.

It’s on the highway that I grew to really like this Lexus. It’s everything you’d expect from this marque: solid, luxurious, safe, full of amenities and quiet. There are 10 airbags poised to go into action if things go spectacularly awry: dual-stage front, dual-stage driver and front passenger knee, seat mounted side impact, middle row outboard seat side and roll-sensing front and rear/side air curtains.

The LX 570 comes with a 115-volt standard power outlet, a feature I find helpful for re-charging cell phones and computers. The problem here is the location all the way in the rear.

The four-wheel adaptive suspension system automatically adjusts ride height and stiffness, providing a smooth passage over tough road conditions. At night, the standard adaptive front lighting system refocuses the lights to illuminate more of the road when entering a curve. Headlight washers and fog lights are also standard.

Everything goes together so well and the seats are so comfortable, I was tempted to get in and just keep going. I’d meet a lot of new people who would admire my ride…but a good many of them would be filling station attendants.
