A simple clean Saab for winter

The Saab 9-3 isn't a car that evokes too many feelings at first look - the body style is straight forward with very few ripples or creases to give on-lookers a lasting impression, but I was pleasantly surprised by what it had to offer.

The Saab 9-3 Aero comes packed with power everything, all wrapped up in a comfortable cabin. The seating surfaces are covered in leather, along with the steering wheel, providing a nice feel overall. The cabin is also trimmed with silver accents, no more obvious than it is on the steering wheel. It does look cool, but it reminds me of a wheel that should be attached to a video game system.

The dash and centre stack receive the same Saab design they've had for years, the only difference is that buttons and knobs have a cleaner overall design. In the past, there have been too many buttons and I felt almost hesitant to touch anything without really studying it first.

The climate control system heats up the cabin quickly and kept the kids toasty warm in the back seats.

One quibble would the erratic air conditioning. When I turn the dial to high that means the buttons I press after it should be set for high as well and not slow down — maybe it was some sort of energy savings feature.

In the centre stack you'll find an optional DVD navigation system, CD player and satellite radio. The power sunroof adds a nice view of the clear blue skies, but when you've got clear skies during winter it's also freezing cold, so we just kept the roof closed.

Cargo room is decent for a car this size. The trunk is large enough for large grocery trips and with the fold-down 60/40 rear seats you have even more room.

Getting things moving is a turbocharged 2.8-litre V6 that hammers out 273 horsepower. Coupled to a six-speed automatic; it moves the 9-3 quickly and has plenty of gusto when passing on the highway.

The Saab 9-3 sticks to pavement and cuts through all kinds of snow. Granted, the 9-3 was fitted with winter boots, but there is more going on than just the right rubber.

Hidden under the Aero nameplate there is a small XWD tag, which stands for Cross Wheel Drive — all-wheel drive for everyone else outside of Saab.

The system works fluidly, transferring power to the wheels that have more grip; with the added traction control and electronic stability program, keeping the nose of the car pointed in the right direction is easy.

Cold weather starting — no problem.

I was concerned the 9-3 wouldn't start the first time overnight temperatures dropped to -40. And yet, I got out there first thing in the morning and there was barely a hesitation.

Some surprises aren't that great. I don't look at the price tag on any of the vehicles I drive until my time's up. That's where I had to give a double take at the price tag of just under $53,000.

Yikes! It's a fine vehicle, but I'm thinking that this car is aimed squarely at people who have no concerns for an economic downturn.

Who would have guessed that under that clean, simple exterior the 9-3 Aero XWD would offer the kind of power and comfort usually reserved for larger vehicles? If you can get past the price you might be surprised as well.
