Affordable Porsche for all seasons

It may not have a big V8, a million gadgets and a suede headliner, but the entry level Porsche Cayenne is a fine SUV nonetheless.

Yes, I said entry level.

Search for a used Porsche Cayenne

The Porsche Cayenne Tiptronic starts at just over 60 grand. It may not seem 'entry level' to most, but when compared to its big brother the Cayenne Turbo S at $155,000 and up, the straight Cayenne is a deal. Add $8,000 in options and the Cayenne I tested creeps in under $70,000 — still half of what that of the Turbo S.

So what? You're missing out on a 500 horsepower beast!

Yes, the 3.6-litre V6 'only' puts out 290 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque, but it's by no means a wall flower. The Cayenne moves quickly enough when you lay into it and howls from the engine to the large dual exhaust tips.

The best part during winter is even after you've turned off the Cayenne, the exhaust tips look like the ends of a smoking gun. Yes, I amuse easily.

Do the kids like it? Oh yes! They got a kick on our weekend drive out of town and whizzing by other cars with ease was something they begged to have more of.

You can easily forget you're driving a large SUV, when you look down at the speedo and the number isn't what it should be.

Being a responsible parent I just let them know that we are only passing the slow drivers and weren't allowed to speed, because we would get a ticket.

Disgruntled, they accepted that explanation. No one wants to get in trouble with the police.

The Cayenne handles well around corners with an independent wishbone suspension, Porsche Traction Management and Porsche Stability Managment. It's not a nimble sports car, but it's a great handling SUV. Add in a 38/62 split, front to rear all-wheel-drive system and winter driving is something at which you can laugh.

Inside, there is plenty of room for a family of four, or five if the kids aren't big.

The seats are comfortable and provide plenty of support and the heated front seats don't hurt either. The audio system is straight forward — an AM/FM/CD sound system with 12 speakers. There's no touch screen but the buttons are simple and easy to figure out. The driver can also control the music choice from the steering wheel.

Add in the standard power options like doors, windows, mirrors and cruise control, plus the optional power sunroof and the drive is simple and pleasurable.

Safety isn't missed in the Cayenne either with two-stage driver/passenger airbags, side airbags and full length side curtain airbags.

The rear cargo is large enough and comes with a roll away privacy screen to hide your goodies. Cargo spaces in the cabin are held to the centre console, which isn't large, the side door pockets and the glove box, but that will just ensure you remove your garbage and papers from the cars when you leave.

I still will never be able to own a Porsche of any kind in my lifetime, but for those who like the cachet of the Porsche emblem and don't want to break the bank, this is a good option.

When it comes down to it, no one cares whether you have the base Cayenne or a Turbo S, they'll just see it's a Porsche.

Not too bad at all.
