Legacy promotes clean air

The environmentally-friendly vehicle - everybody wants one, but the thought of having a vehicle that runs on batteries in a frigid cold climate is not that appealing.

Besides, there are options for a greener planet already under our noses that don't break the bank or sacrifice comfort or performance.

Subaru's latest Legacy entry level sedan comes as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle or PZEV, as this vehicle is tagged.

Legacy is still a sharp looking vehicle, while being only a few years removed from its latest makeover. It sits nicely on 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels and has an athletic stance even though it's "just" the entry level car.

And that little PZEV logo with the green leaf is the only indication that this car is any different from other Legacys.

The good thing is that Legacy has everything a family could need on the comfort side. There's plenty of room inside and it still comes with the customary entertainment and comfort gadgetry.

Legacy comes with an AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA audio system complete with satellite radio. The seats may be cloth, but you still get the benefits of heated seats.

Climate controls are simply laid out and easy to use. Power windows, doors and mirrors are available at the flick of a switch.

Front seats are comfortable and give a good amount of support to the driver and passenger. Rear seats are decent as well, giving passengers a good amount of leg room.

The trunk is large and will give families all the room they require for the next grocery trip.

Power comes from a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque. It's a straightforward gas engine that doesn't spew a bunch of pollution from its backside.

The Legacy moves briskly and will still manage to keep a smile on your face even knowing that it's only a four-banger moving you along.

Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel-drive, of course, comes standard in Legacy. The system handles anything thrown at it and snowy roads are no match for the rubber onslaught the all-wheel-drive doles out.

Given that this Legacy only comes with a four-speed automatic, it still manages to move the power from the engine to the four wheels without too much effort. It also comes with the added Sportshift function, which gives the micro-manager the ability to control the gear selection.

The ride is comfortable and maintains a nimble feel through the steering wheel to the driver.

While most of the world still isn't hugging trees, there are still plenty of options out there to keep everyone heading in the right direction.

Even though the Legacy PZEV isn't a hybrid it still maintains good fuel economy and generates the low emissions everyone likes.
