A3 brightens up the winter blues

Winter be damned! And damned and damned again.

In my neck of the woods, it seems it's either freezing cold to the point that you never want to leave the house, or it's a nice day ... for five minutes ... and then the snow comes strolling in.

What makes it even worse, I still have to get out and do a car review.

Yeah, poor me.

Search for a used Audi A3

While the weather didn't want to co-operate with me, I had no problems getting out of the house to spin around in the latest drive, the Audi A3.

And I'm going to put this out there right away: I love this car!

There wasn't a moment I wished I was driving something else. The best part is I easily forgot how bad it was outside. Snow covered roads are no match for the Quattro all-wheel-drive system.

This A3 packs a wallop under the hood, with a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder, capable of 200 horsepower and 207 lb.-ft. of torque. Power is available at any moment, giving you good acceleration off the line and keeping enough power in reserve for passing on the highway.

Mated to the engine is the six-speed S-tronic, a dual clutch automated manual or direct shift gearbox (DSG) that acts like an automatic transmission with a sequential-shift mode, which can be shifted via the stick or steering wheel paddles.

I'm not a real fan of the manu-matic modes or paddle shifting in general because I find the response time usually lags behind where I would like the gear change to take place. However, with this set-up the response is quick and makes a fun drive even funner. If you’re not a fan of shifting, you need not worry - the A3 manages the shifting with precision and does a great job all on its own.

The A3 handles the road with great stability and traction thanks in part to a sporty suspension, speed sensitive steering, a little ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and the afore-mentioned Quattro system. The A3 rarely gets bent out of shape, even if you get too accelerator happy.

Inside, you're treated to leather trimmed seats

The driver even gets the benefit of power seat adjustments, a leather wrapped steering wheel with complete audio controls for the 10-speaker, single disc audio system with satellite radio. For those with the trusty old iPod you'll find an auxiliary jack in the centre armrest.

Looking up you can enjoy the view through the large Open Sky glass sunroof. Even when it's freezing cold out, seeing the blue sky above you is still nice.

All is not perfect with the A3, though; leg room in the back seat can be a little tight ... even for the kids.

Cargo room is decent and hooked up to the lift gate is a hardtop privacy cover to keep prying eyes off your goodies. For extra room for your extra large items the rears seats fold down in the all-too-standard 60/40 split with a lockable pass-through door. The kids liked being able to stash their Nintendo DS games in the cargo area, knowing they would be waiting for them when we got back to the car.

I find that the size and drivability of the A3 close to what I would ever want in a smaller car, but the performance is the main reason to get into the A3.

If you listen carefully you might be able to hear winter saying 'damn you A3!!!'

And you can laugh at it all you want.
