Beastly luxury

Just when we thought we were out of the woods with clear streets and puddles for cars and kids to splash in, old man winter turns around and says, ‘Not so fast.’ In a cruel twist of fate he dumps 20 cm of the white stuff down, leaving my daughter to exclaim, ‘Spring will never come!’

Forget spring, how is everyone going to get to work?

Search for a used Lexus LX

Even if owning an SUV can make you believe you are still infallible to the clutches of winter, all it takes is a two to three foot tall drift to stop that kind of thinking and your SUV dead in its tracks.

Yes, that was me laughing at you ... driving by in the Lexus LX 570.

The funny part about having an SUV this size is the weather usually never cooperates. It will either be really cold or really warm, rain or snow, but never the kind of mixed bag I had in my week. And I was grateful.

Driving in the LX, I never had a concern I wouldn’t get where I needed to go. Slush and snow were mere short term obstacles, as one would expect in a vehicle this size — over 5,500 lbs.

With that kind of size you need a big engine to get it moving and the LX 570 had just that — a 5.7-litre V8 that produces 383 horsepower and 403 lb.-ft. of torque. A six speed transmission is strapped to this bad boy and gets the power down to the full-time four wheel drive quite well.

While the numbers look pretty good, the sheer weight of this SUV seems to keep you from moving with any kind of speed off the line, without hammering on the gas. At cruising speed it’s a whole different story with a good amount of power available for passing.

Whether it’s staying upright or keeping pointed in the right direction, the LX comes equipped with vehicle stability control, active traction control, hill-start assist control and downhill assist control. All work without you even noticing or they can be used with a flick of a switch.

Shorter people will struggle to get into the behemoth, using whatever they can get their hands on to pull themselves in — sitting on optional 20-inch wheels probably didn’t help — but the driver can help with a flick of the height adjustment switch. Anything to ensure the wife and kids won’t suffer too much.

There is no lack of space in the LX, with plenty of room up front for the driver and passenger, plus great room in the second row for two or three more passengers. The fold down third row seats are good in a pinch, but don’t allow for much leg room and cut the cargo space down to zilch.

Leather seating surfaces and wood accents are, of course, standard in this Lexus, plus plenty of other goodies one would expect from a luxury SUV. A navigation system is front and centre in the dash and doubles as a backup rear-view camera monitor. Just below, you’ll find the automatic climate controls, a nine speaker premium audio system with an in-dash six disc CD changer, MP3/WMA capability, and auxiliary input jack. To finish it off there are also controls for the heating and cooling function for the power front seats — great at the beginning of the week when the weather was warm and even better once things got cold again.

The outboard second row seats also get the benefit of a heat function, but with my kids in boosters they weren’t able to experience this tush treat.

At just over $87,000, the LX 570 is not for everyone. But for a luxury SUV it comes with plenty of power and gizmos to keep those with higher tastes on the good side of happy.

Knowing that you may not have to worry about getting stuck in deep snow ... priceless.

Oops, wrong catch phrase.
