A powerful idea

There won’t be too many people that will mistake the look of the new Acura TL for anything else on the road. The new, bold, aggressive styling is just the start of the latest offering from Acura, and it is the most powerful Acura ever built – in more ways than one.

Search for a used Acura TL

The styling of the new TL is quite difficult to describe. At first look, yes, it’s a new Acura, but when you look closer, the aggressiveness in the look starts to come through. With the large lower fascia, and the sleek, ‘mean’ looking lights, seeing the TL behind you in the fast lane will definitely make you think about switching lanes.

The rear has much the same treatment, the quad exhaust tips (on the AWD model) completing the look. From the side, the TL looks good, with proportional overhangs at the front and rear.

Inside the new TL, the first thing you notice is the sheer number of buttons and switches, all with their individual markings. Now, this may be a small point, but for us well aged folks, reading some of the switches can be a little difficult. That being said, once you get the hang of the location of the most often used switches, it’s not a problem. The gauges are easy to read, and the navigation screen is recessed enough that the glare doesn’t affect it. The gear selector has a good feel and is easily in reach – and I like the handbrake location beside the selector.

The new TL comes in various forms, with ‘base’ having a 3.5-litre, 24-valve SOHC VTEC V6 that puts out 280 hp @ 6200 rpm, and 254 lb.-ft. @ 5000 rpm. The TL SH-AWD (for Super Handling All Wheel Drive) package that was our test vehicle has the 3.7-litre V6, which puts out 305 hp @ 6300 rpm, and 273 lb.-ft. @ 5000 rpm.

With the SH-AWD coming in at 1797 kg, it gives the TL a very respectable power to weight ratio of 5.891kg/hp.

When you drive the new TL, you will be surprised at the light feel. The electronic power steering is perfectly metered to give you solid feedback, but is not too heavy for city driving and parking.

The engine and transmission package in the SH-AWD is – and I hate to say this – typically Acura. The 3.7 with its Multi-Point Programmed Fuel Injection system is one of the smoothest power deliveries out there, coupled with a great sound. It accelerates effortlessly, and before you know it, you’re into triple digits on the speedometer. The sound of the V6, urges you to plant your right foot whenever the opportunity arises, but it does have a detrimental effect on economy. I tried to balance my sound versus fuel mileage for the extended time I had the TL and I did manage a very respectable 9.2 L/100 km over a 1,200 km trip.

The TL is loaded with all the equipment you’d expect from a top line sport sedan, and when you add the technology package, you get Acura Navigation System with trilingual Voice Recognition, rear view camera with onscreen display guidelines, wallpaper function and illuminated steering wheel mounted controls and the Acura/ELS Surround Premium 440-watt Sound System with CD, DVD-Audio and DTS changer, AM/FM/XM tuner with (RDS-enabled), MP3/Windows Media Audio compatibility, Dolby Pro Logic II and 10 speakers.

Safety is always at the forefront, and the new TL features active front seat head restraints, airbags at the front and front side airbags with occupant position detection. The TL also has ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), vehicle Stability Assist and Brake Assist all with in its Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure.

The bottom line on the new TL is that it is the next logical step in the Acura line. It has everything you’d want, at a realistic price and it looks great doing whatever you want. The engineering, the quality, the fit and finish is second to none.

Personally, I think Acuras don’t get the recognition they deserve. I don’t know why when we all talk about true sport sedans; Acuras don’t seem to make it into the water cooler discussions. I do know that if you take the time to add the TL to your list of ‘possible’ choices when looking for a world class sport sedan, you’ll be glad you did.
