A6 premium by all accounts

At a time when the economy is suffering and many other carmakers are dying for sales, Audi is humming along just fine, thank you. So what’s attracting buyers to Audi? Plenty. The company has come out with exciting models that look great, perform exceptionally well and handle like a dream.

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but who could argue with the fact that the A6 we tested for a week is easy on the eyes. Designed for life on the Autobahn, it’s built for speed - and looks like it too.

Search for a used Audi A6

For 2009, the A6 is even sleeker and sexier with new foglamps, front bumper, front grille, headlights with optional LED daytime running lights and a new 2-piece rear lamp with more LEDs.

Our tester was dressed up to look even better than stock, with the optional S Line sport package that includes 19-inch wheels with performance rubber, an S Line bumper and front grille with badge, and a rear spoiler. Think of S Line as a refined body kit that gives the A6 a more aggressive and muscular stance, without any gaudy or over-the-top excesses.

Audi is marketed as a premium brand and the A6 lives up to the gold standard as it is clearly built for individuals who are used to first class treatment. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the passenger cabin of this luxury sports sedan is as pleasing to the senses as the exterior.

Modern and sophisticated, the interior attests to Audi’s commitment to attention to detail. For 2009, Audi has taken advantage of the shine and sparkle of aluminum to embellish an already stunning passenger cabin. Aluminum interior accents have been added to the steering wheel, instrument cluster, and some of the switches for added pizzazz, while a new silver cover adorns the dash, and a new round aluminum start button and parking brake switch enhance the look of the centre console.

A premium brand wouldn’t be complete without leather, which you’ll find throughout - wherever wood trim or aluminum haven’t already been used by the interior designers who put together the A6’s colour scheme.

The A6 comes with not one, not two, not even three, but four engine options. You can order it with the powerplant that best suits your lifestyle and/or need for speed. The “entry level” 3.2-litre V6 offers a healthy 255 hp, while the top-of-the-line 5.2-litre V10 boasts a smokin’ 435 hp and 398 lbs.-ft. of torque. While the 3.2-litre engine comes with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), the more robust powerplants offer a six-speed Tiptronic (manual and automatic in a single neat package).

The six-speed tranny not only allows all those ponies to gallop in their respective sweet spots, but it also helps with fuel economy. Our tester burned an average of about 10 litres per 100 km with the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 version of the A6. That’s pretty good when you consider we were packing 300 hp.

Audi’s direct fuel injection technology, known as FSI, is also responsible for the impressive fuel economy numbers. With FSI technology, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. FSI increases torque output and improves responsiveness while limiting fuel use: the best of both worlds.

Our 3.0-litre tester came equipped with something even better than FSI: TFSI. That’s FSI plus turbocharging, or in our case, supercharging. The result: a wonderful experience where the neck snaps back the instant the foot finds the floor. Add Quattro all-wheel-drive technology to the mix and prepare to enjoy a wonderful kick in the pants that would make NASA astronauts envious of the G-forces.

All that power would be useless without the proper suspension. Audi has tweaked the suspension of ‘09 A6 models for maximum comfort and dynamic handling. New large-diameter front axle shock absorbers are part of the upgrade package, as is an improved spring response.

The above upgrades might make sense to car geeks who enjoy the technical stuff. In the real world, all this means is that the A6 offers drivers the comfort and ride they want for long relaxing road trips, and the handling/responsiveness they need when more aggressive driving and/or evasive manoeuvres are desired.

The A6 is a true sports sedan with all the muscle and athleticism those of us who love driving want, as well as the creature comforts and luxuries we (and our passengers) crave. Toss in cool technologies like the new side assist blind spot detection system, a start/stop engine button, an electromechanical parking brake, a killer sound system, a rearview camera, navigation system and more, and what’s not to love?
