Very posh indeed!

There are certain vehicles on this planet that come with a pedigree, a validation of performance, and a reputation that seems unanimous amongst anyone you ask, and the Range Rover Sport falls into that category.

Ask anyone and the first thing that pops out of their mouths about a Range Rover, is the phenomenal off road capability of the brand.

The 2009 Range Rover Sport lives up to that claim with flying colours. But before I get to that, there is another aspect to the Range Rover Sport that you should know about.

It’s about making a statement.

You see, when you are at the helm of a 2009 Range Rover Sport, either a naturally aspirated 4.4-litre 300 hp normally aspirated V8 version or the Supercharged 4.2-litre V8 with 390 hp, people will notice you – its just that simple.

You stand out, end of story. It is, after all, a Range Rover.

But it’s a much different ‘stand out’ than if you were tooling around in the latest Lambo or Ferrari. The Range Rover offers a much more refined, luxurious and confident stand out claim.

Range Rover says, “The Range Rover Sport, available with Land Rover’s Dynamic Response active suspension system, is the SUV of choice to those who enjoy fast, long-distance touring.”

Really, that is the thing you need to know most about the new Range Rover Sport.

For 2009, all Range Rover Sports are now equipped with clear lenses for the tail lamps and side turn signal lamps. Body-colour paint replaces a matte-black finish on the lower portion of the tailgate appliqué while the rear bumper’s protective tread strip has a new texture.

Inside, there’s a new Noble metal finish for the vent bezels, door pulls, and the upper side trim on the center console. An almond coloured leather trim with nutmeg coloured carpets and carpeted mats are now offered. Additions to the exterior colours are; Bournville (a very dark brown metallic), Santorini Black (metallic), and Galway Green (a dark hue). The Supercharged models also have new 20-inch wheel designs this year.

But let me get back to the Dynamic Response, which is standard on the Supercharged models and offered as an option on the Luxury package of the HSE.

This is what – in part – takes the Range Rover Sport to the next level in on road performance.

The Dynamic Response active suspension system, which features active anti-roll bars that balance handling and manage body roll, creates a very confident and stable feeling even when the Range Rover is pushed hard. The Brembo front disc brakes, which are part of the Dynamic Response package, seem to have enough power to stop a 100-car freight train. Add to that independent double-wishbone suspension system at each corner, high-capacity monotube dampers and Speed-sensitive, variable-ratio ZF power rack-and-pinion steering system and you end up with a very potent on road tourer.

To get the most out of the touring experience, the Range Rover transmission, a ZF electronically-controlled six-speed automatic offers three modes—automatic, sport, and CommandShift (manual).

Okay, I’ll admit it, I was surprised – and duly impressed – at the on road performance of the Supercharged model I had.

Range Rover Sport’s Terrain Response system is what Land Rover’s reputation is built on and it offers second to none off-road versatility that does everything you need at the touch of a button. Setting a console knob in one of five available positions adjusts throttle response, optimizes the transmission’s gear changes, positions the air suspension at the appropriate ride height, and sets the center and rear differentials (when so equipped) in a mode right for the terrain. DSC, ETC, ABS, and HDC functions are also altered by each Terrain Response setting, and the five modes are general, grass/gravel/snow, mud and ruts, sand, and rock crawl.

The Range Rover has all that you’d expect on the safety front, including hydro formed steel frame rails that provide superior resistance to side impacts and controlled crush front and rear to absorb collision energy, six airbags and the LATCH system for attaching a child safety seat at any rear position.

The interior is what you’d expect in a Range Rover - nicely laid out and the fit and finish is very good. The quality of the materials just oozes luxury, and one thing I did like was that the programmable key fob can command the air suspension to lower to facilitate easy entry.

The bottom line on the Range Rover Sport is that it comes as advertised. Brilliant off road, with great ride quality and power for the on road jaunts. Really, I felt safe and in control in any situation with the Range Rover, and that says it all.
