Underrated luxury performer

San Diego is a city that for many seems to fly under the radar when mentioning favourite places to visit in California. Exactly why this happens is a mystery to me.

Temperatures are consistent all through the year, rarely dipping below 10° C and seldom exceeding 26° C. California’s second largest city and number eight in the United States; it boasts teams in the NFL and Major League Baseball. The Gaslamp Quarter is a top spot for shopping and dining, while no visit to the area would be complete without time spent at the San Diego Zoo.

In a similar manner to the city by the bay in Southern California, Infiniti has a tendency to go unnoticed when consumers develop their wish list of luxury vehicles. This too is a shame. With excellent vehicles, stunning exterior designs, superb interior execution and powerful performance credentials, Infiniti is a brand that deserves first place consideration.

The newly freshened 2009 Infiniti FX35 AWD is easy to like and hard to leave parked in the driveway. It is one of those rare crossover vehicles you enjoy driving no matter the condition of the road or weather.

Equipped with a 3.5-litre DOHC V6, performance is increased for 2009 with the addition of 25 extra ponies. Total horsepower is now rated at 303 with 262 lb.-ft. of torque.

Exterior design improvements include aluminum-alloy front and rear doors, carbon fibre composite radiator supports and a composite rear hatch, plus super light alloy wheels and a spare wheel. All assist in dramatically reducing weight; the result being a significant upgrade in fuel economy. At a time when every penny counts, city ratings are improved 9% to 13.3 L/100km while highway economy improves nearly 20% to 9.3 L/100 km.

A new three-mode, seven-speed automatic transmission improves acceleration, drivability and fuel economy. Standard ASC, (adaptive shift control) downshift rev matching and solid magnesium paddle shifters make for a superior on road experience. Adding to the ambience, the newly tuned exhaust note is music to the ears.

A short five minute drive across the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge resides the small community of Coronado Island. Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, Glorietta and San Diego Bays, this city of 26,000 people is also home to the North Island Naval Air Station and Naval Amphibious Base.

Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa is ideally situated on the island, facing the downtown skyline of San Diego near the Ferry Landing Marketplace.

A three-storey deluxe resort, it features 273 rooms and 27 suites. Recent renovations include luxurious Revive Bedding, down comforters, custom duvets, large flat screen TVs and oversized bathtubs. Interior earth tones and pastel colours used throughout blend with the outside tropical atmosphere of the resort.

Spa Coronado features a full menu of treatments to help relieve stress or you can simply relax in one of three heated swimming pools located throughout the resort. Those seeking a little more when it comes to recreation have the opportunity to golf at nearby Coronado Golf Course or better yet, drive 30 km and challenge your skill at magnificent Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at Current restaurant. Exceptional evening views overlook San Diego with Petco Park in the distance. Tides Day and Night bar is the perfect setting for casual fare or Starbucks coffee.

Leaving the resort for the day, we took the 2009 Infiniti FX35 on a scenic route through downtown Coronado stopping at various eclectic shops and Village Pizzeria on the way. Speed bumps are common on city streets in California, but what is not is the sight of water filling roadways to the point of overflowing. It never rains in California, but when it pours…! With SUV capabilities, the Infiniti FX35 had no trouble navigating the suddenly flooded terrain.

Driving past iconic Hotel Del Coronado we circumnavigated San Diego Bay, passing Silver Strand State Beach before eventually reaching the mainland.

Twenty minutes later we arrived at the San Diego Zoo. Recognized around the world as the yardstick by which all city zoos are measured, exploring this vast complex is an excellent way to spend the day. Even in a torrential downpour, the sight of Snow Leopards, Tiger cubs and an African elephant calf among many others was breathtaking.

The 2009 Infiniti FX35 is the perfect counterpart to locations such as Coronado Island and San Diego. All deserve consideration when looking for a new vehicle or your next holiday destination that’s a little out of the ordinary.
