Enclave asserts sovereignty

The last time I tested a Buick Enclave, in 2008, it was a loaded CXL model with all-wheel drive.

This week, in keeping with the lessening of expectations for many consumers in this recession, it’s a 2009 CX with front wheel drive.

For 2009 the price difference between the two models is over $10,000.

Unlike the CXL I reviewed last year, which was loaded with standard features and options, the only extra-cost item on this week’s tester was remote vehicle start for $255. That makes it about as plain Jane as any Enclave available. But that doesn’t mean it’s not smart enough to drive to the country club dance.

A base model Enclave is a lot different than a base model Chevrolet Aveo. Counted among its built-in creature comforts are tri-zone automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, power windows/locks/heated mirrors, tilt and telescopic steering, cruise control, remote keyless entry, navigation system plus OnStar, power front seats and a power liftgate.

The seven-passenger CX comes with front and side impact airbags for driver and front passenger and head curtain airbags for all three rows. Stabilitrak is standard, along with four-wheel anti-lock brakes and traction control.

Although our CX didn’t have the CXL’s leather surfaces, its cloth upholstery was attractive and grippy – for both bottoms and lint – and there was the usual perfect blend of woodgrain and chrome accents. I still like the centre console storage bin that slides fore and aft. Not only is it a comfortable armrest for drivers of all sizes, but flip it up and there’s a neat storage compartment that can be lifted out to reveal a secret (and deep) bin for valuable items.

Gauges are totally cool with white numbers and turquoise pointers. The readout on the standard driver information centre is turquoise too. An analogue clock situated between the central air outlets is hard to read and there mostly because interior stylists seem to think such a chronometer de rigeur. The digital clock in the audio system display is more easily read.

As with every Enclave I’ve ever examined, interior fit and finish was excellent.

I wish I could say the same for our test vehicle’s paint job. The Ming Blue metallic paint suffered from as bad a case of orange peel as I’ve seen on a new car. GM is supposed to be cost conscious. Don’t they know all that extra paint adds weight and costs money? My mechanic friend Mike Johnston remarked that it looked like something we did ourselves in his back yard – on a windy day.

As are all Enclaves, our tester was powered by a 3.6-litre DOHC V6. For 2009, output has been increased from 275 hp and 251 lb.-ft. of torque to 288 hp and 270 lb.-ft. Coupled to a smooth six-speed automatic transmission, Enclave can sprint from 0-100 km/h in about 8.0 seconds.

Surprisingly, the FWD CX wasn’t quite as fuel-efficient as the AWD CXL, averaging 11.7 L/100 km vs. the 11.5 I recorded last year. On the highway, even without the CXL’s fine tuning package, the CX was smooth and quiet with very little wind and road noise making it into the elegant cabin

Seats are extremely comfortable in the first two rows, with a centre aisle between captain’s chairs that slide and tilt to let passengers clamber back to an unusually roomy third row split bench seat.

With the third row seats upright, luggage space is a generous 18.9 cubic feet. When second and third rows are folded, cargo capacity increases to a 116.2 cubic feet. And, the cargo compartment is easily accessed by a power liftgate that raises and lowers at the touch of a button on the key fob. Properly equipped, it can tow up to 4,500 lbs.

Outward vision is mostly good and Enclave parks and drives smaller than its 5125mm overall length might suggest.
