Luxury year-round runabout

I dig the small SUV.

I like the size and the ability to go anywhere; and, the ability to get around a city in any weather is what most people seem to want in a vehicle such as this - load up the family and take a spin around town; and if we have to stop and pickup stuff along the way, there needs to be room for that too.

Of course there’s still a few of us who like to ride in style and drive something that has performance and good looks to boot.

Based on the Honda CR-V, the Acura RDX is a sharp little number that has a nice edgy quality. The exterior design is distinctive from the CR-V and it doesn’t have that goofy smile.

Behind the grille is a 2.3-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder that can deliver the goods with 240 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. Attached to a five-speed automatic complete with paddle shifting, the RDX can really move from a dead stop and has plenty of top end speed for highway passing.

The RDX feels sporty and handles curvy roads with ease. Making the RDX a nimble little vehicle is a little thing Acura likes to call SH-AWD or Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (and after all, when you add ‘super’ to anything it always makes it better).

The ride is pretty good for a small SUV, but can be a bit choppy at times (partly because of the short wheelbase). It’s nothing that won’t hamper the enjoyment of the RDX, but upscale personalities may expect a more refined drive. And if the kids don’t complain about it, it can’t be all bad.

The interior space is quite something, from the leather seats to the pleasant use of textures and surfaces that wrap around the cabin. While the fit and finish is top notch, I did find the silvery plastic pieces looked a bit out of place. A brushed chrome look would have really worked well in this instance, but maybe that’s just me.

Seats are comfortable and there’s a good amount of leg room up front and in back. There are enough safety belts for five people, but that’s if the fifth person doesn’t mind being in a tight back seat with two other people. So, it’s best suited for four.

The kids got a good view out the rear windows and the driver and front passenger will enjoy the same great view.

Rear cargo space is good for grocery trips to Costco and all those boxes will fit nicely under a hard plastic privacy cover. There is a good amount of small cubbies stashed around the cabin, as well as a handy centre console that can store your gloves and is topped by a multi-function lid that holds coins, a pen and business cards.

The RDX comes packed with goodies, including a 13-speaker, six-CD changer and satellite radio system, heated seats, sun roof, Bluetooth hands-free phone link, navigation system with a screen that doubles as a monitor for the backup camera.

There isn’t much to hate about the RDX. In fact I didn’t really hate anything.

The size is perfect, the amenities are great and the performance will keep a smile on your face. Even if the kids really want to go home.
