Compact is the new Grand

Quick now - can you think of any other ‘Grand’ vehicles, past or present?

If ‘Grand Vitara’ doesn’t come to mind right away, don’t feel bad. Suzuki’s entry in the overcrowded compact SUV segment is a fine vehicle, but it doesn’t do much to stand out from the herd, despite a refreshed exterior for 2009, two new engines and some interior enhancements.

Search for a used Suzuki Grand Vitara

For 2009, the Grand Vitara gets two new engines - a four-cylinder (a first for this vehicle) and a larger V6 than last year’s. The 3.2-litre V6 fitted in Autonet’s tester is not only bigger, but it’s a much more powerful beast than last year’s engine. It gets a hefty boost in horsepower and torque, but actually sees improved highway fuel economy (and only slightly worse city economy).

It is commendable that Suzuki gives the option for the two engines, but the four-cylinder almost makes the V6 redundant - that’s a compliment toward the smaller engine, not a slag against the larger one; the four-cylinder still has plenty of grunt behind it (close to as much as the Grand Vitara’s outgoing V6, in fact) and is that much extra power delivered by the new V6 really needed? The smaller engine also has the exact same towing capacity (a generous 3,000 lbs.) as the V6 and it’s really not that much louder.

Though there are a few accessories that can be added to the Grand Vitara - most of them to improve aesthetics - there are no option packages available. There are four trim levels, and they all come well-equipped, with even the next-to-cheapest JX trim getting a keyless entry and start system, six speaker sound system with subwoofer, heated power side mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel and cruise control.

It’s also nice to see that every trim level gets so much standard safety equipment. Six airbags, antilock brakes, electronic stability program and a high-mounted rear stop lamp can be found on every Grand Vitara, while a four-mode four-wheel drive system is available on all but the base JA trim.

It’s not often you hear about Grand Vitaras being taken off road - by all accounts, it sure looks like it can when you read its features list - but whether you’re using the 4WD system to take the vehicle over rugged trails, or simply for extra insurance over slippery road conditions, it’s nice the vehicle can be so equipped.

Where the Grand Vitara falters somewhat is in size in relation to its competitors. We won’t go through every competitor and every interior dimension, but in general, the Suzuki five-seater simply isn’t particularly spectacular when it comes to head room, leg room, or cargo space. It’s also befuddling that as the process of folding seats in vehicles becomes less complicated by the year, the Grand Vitara still uses hooks to hold the second row seats up when they’re folded - practically archaic in the 21st century!

Kudos still have to be given when it comes to the rest of the interior though. No one will claim it’s a Lexus, but the Grand Vitara has a well laid out cockpit, comfortable seats, a design that’s pleasing to the eye (albeit slightly plasticky) and nice leather (if you so choose the top trim on either the four- or six-cylinder model).

It may not be all that memorable, but the Grand Vitara manages to make a strong case for itself in the compact SUV segment thanks to good looks, lots of standard features and most importantly, a competitive price.
