A Smart-er performer

Where the heck are my white ‘Flash Harry’ shoes! I have the new, oozing style Smart Brabus and I have to look the part for a night out on the town. The Smart is holding up its part, now I have to do the same.

Brabus is a German aftermarket tuning company and it does for Smart what AMG does for Mercedes. Brabus also works with Mercedes and Maybach vehicles.

Brabus, like AMG, focus on enhancing the looks and performance of the “base” product offering, although when you think of Mercedes-Benz products, “base” isn’t one of the words that first come to mind.

Anyhow, these Brabus dudes did a knock up job on enhancing the base Smart. I especially like the exhaust tuning - you can actually hear the Smart as it thunders up the rev range, the three-cylinder engine sounding remarkably like a V6. Brabus also tuned some suspension (lowering it 10mm) and chassis components to give it a sportier, yet not rougher ride.

Did I mention it gets cool wheels? Seventeen inchers front and rear with big 215/35s on the back, set under wider rear wheel arches.

When you factor in the roof spoiler, rear skirt, fog lamps, front skirt, and side skirts, including a light package for the side skirts, you have quite the looker.

Inside the Brabus, the enhancements are subtle, but well laid-out. The main additions are the Brabus sound system’s 100 watt amplifier cleverly put under the floor mat of the passenger footwell, Brabus gearshift lever and 3-spoke steering wheel with a nice feel and the Brabus sports pedals and velour floor mats.

You have your choice of black or silver exterior colours, and our silver one turned heads wherever it went.

The Brabus treatment is available on Coupe or Cabriolet models. Our tester was a Cabriolet, which provided a great experience driving with the top half back or all the way down, even though the Canadian spring is a little nippy at times.

Really, the Smart is a great overall package for city dwellers, making the most of the interior space available; even the bigger ones among us fit nicely.

I will say that the Brabus additions are very tastefully done, and they don’t take away from the original product – unlike some aftermarket add-ons. Brabus makes quality parts, and the final fit and finish are up to Mercedes-Benz and Smart standards.

I guess, at the end of the day, the option for either a base Smart or Brabus model will be up to you, the buyer. But, I will say that if you intend to ‘personalize’ your Smart, it’s probably a wise decision to just opt for the Brabus version in the first place.

The Smart Fortwo has been stylish and very good at doing what it was designed to do. Now with the Brabus models, it’s just that much more stylish.
