SX4 a solid base

Perception - real or imagined - is certainly a powerful thing in the automotive world.

Just look at an automaker like Hyundai. After years of (real) problems with quality, it put huge efforts into improving that aspect of its vehicles. It took several years before people started trusting the company because of perceptions based on cars made years earlier.

Then you look at Toyota, which has a reputation of having some of the most reliable cars in the world. That may be true, but some people are so blinded by Toyota’s virtuous reputation, they’ll barely consider other brands.

And that takes us to a company like Suzuki. With barely a sliver of the automotive market share pie in Canada, it’s not the kind of automaker people instantly think of when they start shopping for a car. But is a Toyota Corolla (or an Elantra, or a Cobalt, or any other competitor) really that much better than this week’s tester, an SX4 sedan?

For the most part, not really, and in some ways (trunk size, power, features list) the SX4 is inarguably superior.

Granted, the SX4 hasn’t really had a lot of time to garner any type of reputation (good or bad) in Canada as it’s only been available here since 2007, but as Christian Bale and many others on Youtube have taught us, reputations can be made in a matter of minutes.

After only a couple years, the SX4 certainly has a lot of positives on which to build - it’s a roomy, fuel-efficient, well-built compact sedan with plenty of value packed into an affordable package.

The sedan comes in two trim levels - base and Sport - with our tester’s being the Sport version with four-speed automatic transmission. When we say there’s plenty of value packed in, it’s the truth. The Sport model comes with so many convenient features, it’s difficult thinking of anything that Suzuki missed in this package, considering its low price (just a touch over $20,000).

In fact, you could save yourself some money by opting to stick with the standard five-speed manual transmission. The four-speed tends to have a tough time deciding what gear it wants to be in, and once it has chosen one, the shifts themselves come much too slow for our liking. It makes merging onto, or passing on, the highway more than a simple step-on-gas-and-go affair. These moments need to be carefully planned out.

On the highway, or in the city for that matter, the SX4 is surprisingly quiet. One doesn’t need to yell over any wind noise swirling around the cabin, and the engine isn’t buzzy as a lot of other small four-cylinder units can be.

Besides being quiet, the interior is good for a lot of other reasons. In true Suzuki style, everything is laid out simply and elegantly. There’s a ton of head room in front and back, and the seats are very comfortable and nicely supportive (especially in the front).

It’s a good thing the seats are as excellent as they are, too, because the ride in the SX4 leaves something to be desired. It tends to fall apart over bumps and ruts in the road. You’ll wish its steering were a little more responsive so that road imperfections could be more easily navigated around.

Those who prefer a commanding view from the driver’s seat will love the SX4. Good ground clearance and high-set seats along with a ton of glass make for a clear view of the road.

There’s room for improvement in the SX4, but to say there’s a solid foundation to work from would be an understatement. There’s no reason this compact sedan can’t be mentioned in the same breath as its more well-established competition.
