Putting the sport in sport utility

Whoa, there! Who put a sports car into a utility body?

The 2009 Acura RDX is a neat looking creature for a utility, but it doesn’t bring images of quick getaways or playtime on twisty two-lane highways.

But a test vehicle from Honda Canada, which came complete with technology package, put a stop to any “cute ute” thoughts, replacing them with odd ideas of having fun in a utility vehicle.

Its body is well-rounded for a utility vehicle - the sort of design that has become the norm rather than the exception for small crossovers.

Inside, the people space is pleasant and roomy enough to accommodate four adults and a sizeable amount of gear. A hard cargo cover provides a kind of two-tier storage system.

If you need to carry bulkier stuff, the rear seat is split 60/40 and can be folded to provide a nearly-flat cargo floor. However achieving that flat space is not a one-handed job in the RDX. First the seat cushion must be tilted forward, and then the seatback can be folded down. There’s no need to remove the headrests.

The leather-lined seating is comfortable at every position.

On the steering wheel, you find no less than 14 functions, including paddle shifters for the five-speed automatic transmission. Strangely, there’s no gated shifter on the centre console with which to play.

The other functions include three radio buttons, two for Bluetooth phone, four for cruise control and three for the driver information display.

The centre stack houses the navigation system and its interface system. The interface, especially for audio functions, is not a good thing with which to get involved while driving; better you should use the stand-alone controls for the really cool 410-watt 10-speaker sound system - they’re just below the interface knob.

Otherwise everything is just fine in here, thank you. The fit and finish is excellent and, as you’d expect from a luxury brand, there’s power everything at your fingertips.

Performance-wise this thing is a sleeper, lulling other traffic into a false sense of superiority then whizzing past in a blur. If it had a tail, it would flick it in the air.

Under the RDX hood is a four-cylinder engine that puts a decent “bang” in four-banger. The 2.3L mill uses i-VTEC and a turbocharger to whip up 240 horses with 260 lb.-ft. of torque.

Step on the gas and hold on; there’s no turbo lag evident as the rev counter jumps, putting power to all four wheels through Acura’s Super Handling All Wheel Drive system. The engine requires premium fuel in the tank and the driver had better have some smarts in the think tank or the rapidly-increasing velocity will attract attention from someone in a car with blue and red flashing lights.

Damn, this thing is fun, though. The handling is quick and precise and cornering is flat…like a sport sedan. The ride is smooth and the interior remains a peaceful place with only a hint of road noise and minimum of wind rush.

Even if its body is a sport ute, the RDX’s got a sport sedan soul.
