CR-V does a family good

My family is all grown up, hitched up and moved, so it’s a bit strange to be writing about a family friendly vehicle like the 2009 Honda CR-V.

But I assure you I am qualified. I have six grand children, so I still know a thing or two about having little kids in a car.

I know what makes them behave, or misbehave, and I know what makes it easy for me to have them along. That usually translates to bringing a lot of stuff and there’s room in the CR-V to do that. It also means convenience in getting that stuff, including kids, into and out of the vehicle.

Not much has changed for 2009, but the EX-L model provided by Honda Canada shows it has come a long way since its introduction in 1997 -- from a rather utilitarian compact SUV to a highly practical conveyance with a pleasant, if unexciting, appearance.

Inside, the seats are comfortable no matter where you sit, unless you plant your butt in the centre of the split/folding rear seat. That is not a human-friendly position.

Rear doors open wide enough to easily install child seats, a fact much appreciated by grandparents when the little folks are with us. No wrestling needed, unless you count getting the little rascals strapped into their positions.

Once there, they can easily see what’s happening outside which goes a long way toward keeping them content. Bring along a portable DVD player and they will be happy travelers for some time.

Even with rear seat in use, there’s a roomy cargo area made even more efficient by a rigid cargo cover that effectively provides two levels of storage. For big people, there’s plenty of room for two or three golf bags to fit crosswise.

Fold and tumble the rear seats and you more than double the cargo volume.

For the driver, there’s a place for everything and everything gets a proper place. There’s no groping around for controls, and gauges are easy to read – day or night. The only thing I would move is the control for outside mirrors currently located low on the left side of the dash, obscured by the steering wheel. However, after searching around for it a couple of times, it became second nature to reach it without looking.

And while I’m on the interior, what’s with those weird industrial-strength door handles? If they are intended to modify what is otherwise a bland interior, they do that, alright, but they ain’t pretty.

Under the hood is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that puts power to the Real Time four-wheel drive system through a five-speed automatic transmission.

Response to the drive-by-wire throttle is quick enough off the line and the transmission is a smooth worker, but the four-banger is not particularly quick about merging into traffic or passing slower traffic. The disc brakes with ABS and EBD provide much more enthusiasm about their task, however.

If you can get past the acceleration times, the CR-V’s brisk handling can provide a bit of fun in the corners. Vehicle Stability Assist helps keep you on your intended path without ever giving you a harsh reminder that’s it’s there.

Occupants get a full gamut of active safety features, like dual stage, dual-threshold front airbags, front side airbags with passenger-side occupant position detection and front-to-back side curtain airbags.

CR-V isn’t a neck-turner in looks or a neck-snapper in performance, but it’s safe and my grand kids travelled in it without being pains in the neck.

And that’s a good thing.
