Bit of green gets a bit of green

There are two types of hybrid cars in the world - the gas sippers that make you feel good about your decision to go green for the sake of saving the planet; and, the ones that give you more power with which to play, in effect turning your high end car into a rocket when you demand it but still with good emission ratings.

The latter is also known as a Lexus GS 450h.

The long, low slung, luxury cruiser gives the choosiest of buyers a great looking car, while providing a hint of green with its Hybrid Synergy drive system.

Power comes from a 3.5-litre V6 engine combined with the electric motor configuration that boosts net horsepower to 335 while providing 267 lb.-ft. of torque. As a place-to-place driver, the system works flawlessly. You don’t notice when the electric motor kicks in unless you’re watching the display screen.

Hit the pedal for a jolt of power and the GS 450h has no problem with that either, pulling the driver and passengers quickly into the backs of their seats.

For such a large vehicle, the 450h handles quite well. Taking corners with ease and soaking up bumps in relative comfort. The cabin is ultra quiet and even at highway speeds there isn’t much that seeps into your personal head space.

Driving dynamics can be altered with three, push-button modes - Snow, Normal and Power - which makes it easy enough to figure out.

The GS 450h interior is, of course, covered in leather seating surfaces, with power front seats and three levels of heating and cooling for the driver and front passenger.

The fit and finish is top notch and the wood trim just adds to the high-end look — nothing is out of place.

With the added Ultra Premium package, you get a 14-speaker Mark Levinson audio system complete with a cassette deck. Does anyone even use cassettes anymore? There is also an in-dash navigation system which switches over to a backup camera monitor when the car is put into reverse (with parking sensors adding feedback if you still get too close to something).

Passenger room is good, with lots of leg room up front and in back.

Rear seat side airbags are also added to the extensive mix that already includes driver and passenger knee airbags, front seat mounted side-impact airbags and full side curtain airbags.

The trade-off for choosing the hybrid version of the GS is the lack of cargo room. With the battery pack positioned directly behind the rear seats, the trunk becomes very small. It’s enough for groceries, but taking this car on an extended trip with more than two people will create problems with how much to pack. If it is only the two of you that’s fine, but those rear seats don’t fold down either, so you won’t be able to take or pick up anything oversized. Scratch that trip to Ikea off the list.

As a premium vehicle the Lexus GS 450h is top notch.

Is it meant for a family with two small kids? Probably not.

Did anyone seem to care? Not at all.

One thing is certain - retirement may be a long way off for me and the kids may end up living at home well past their intended time, but at least I have something to look forward to.
