Insight into future driving

I like technology as much as the next guy and the latest gadgets and gizmos always pique my interest. Sometimes I even get hooked into buying them and find that sometimes they work as they’re supposed to and sometimes ... not so much.

With the latest Honda Insight, I was interested to see what this hybrid’s return would present.

Good fuel economy is what a hybrid’s all about. The idea gets ingrained in your mind that it only takes a couple drops of fuel to get you from one place to the other, and the rest of the time it’s just running on the battery. It’s a nice thought, but it doesn’t quite work that way.

The stepping stones have already been stepped on, though, and with full electric vehicles on the horizon, it’s interesting to see how far we’ve come and even more, where we are headed.

The Insight returns to the roads in name only, as it is now larger and equipped with better technology than its predecessor.

It’s hard not to notice the Insight, with its odd shape that says ‘Look at me ... I’m almost a wagon.’ It is quite similar to Toyota’s Prius, which has me wondering why they both have to look so ‘different’ from everything else on the road.

The Insight provides a decent amount of space for both bodies and cargo. There is enough room for five, but four is the workable number if you want to keep everyone happy. The seats are comfortable enough; leg room is good; and visibility is decent as well, except out the rear window. The bar that passes between the rear window and the glass on the deck lid will obstruct your view.

The Insight EX does come equipped with some nice features like a navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, paddle shifters (in case you get the urge to be a race car driver) and a good little six-speaker audio system with a USB interface for your iPod.

Power is brought to you by a 1.3-litre four cylinder engine matched to a continuously variable transmission. With the added Integrated Motor Assist, you get a 10-kilowatt electric motor that helps out with performance and fuel savings.

The performance is fine at only 98 horsepower and 123 lb.-ft. of torque and getting from one place to another it works well enough. I could not manage to get fuel consumption much lower than 5.2 L/100 km in mostly city driving, though.

Why is that?

I didn’t baby it by any means, but with the Ecological Drive Assist System (which lets you know how ‘friendly’ you are driving) sitting front and centre, you do get a good indication of how heavy your foot can be. Even when you don’t think you’re doing that badly.

The odd thing about the entire system is the herky-jerky starts. It’s noticeable enough that my wife complained she felt car sick. The one item that made me sick was the fact that when we stopped at red light the ‘Auto Stop’ mode kicked in and shut the engine off. This shouldn’t be a bad thing considering you’re saving gas, but with the engine off the air conditioning system started blowing warm air (made worse by the fact that it was damn hot out!).

The Honda Insight is by no means perfect. It does a good enough job hauling the family around and the eco systems will keep close tabs on your lead foot, but the hiccup with the air conditioning left me with a “wait and see” attitude.
