Growing up fast

Summer came in with a whimper this year and hasn’t made a full scale appearance for any length of time.

Then I looked at the calendar and realized I was in line to drive the next Porsche in town — the Carrera 4 Cabriolet.

Looking good as always, this Carrera got decked out in Porsche Racing Green Metallic paint, a black top and Sand Beige Standard Leather.

Never is the weather more important than when you get behind the wheel of a convertible. And because it was summer I was, naturally, expecting seven days of glorious sun.

That was not to be.

The week started off nice enough, but then the clouds rolled in and the rain came down, and wouldn’t leave for four days. Four days without a top down on a convertible is torture.

Even when the rain did stop it was only at night and then it was darn cold. So, my wife and I did what anyone would do — we when out to meet with friends and drove with the top down and the heat turned on.

While I usually bug my wife about her turning on the heated seats during summer, that came in handy as well. If we were even a bit warm we could possibly use the ventilation function on the seats as well, but we settled for warmth.

It wasn’t until the weekend that we got to enjoy a little warm sun, so we packed up the kids and went for a drive.

While the Carrera does have four seats the rear seats are meant for kids who are not usually concerned with how uncomfortable they are. Thank goodness mine fit into that category.

They had to manoeuvre their legs into awkward positions before the fronts seats were adjusted just to allow them have them sit normally but once strapped in, we all enjoyed the day together, with the wind blowing through our hair.

Getting the wind moving quickly past us is a breeze when you step on the gas. The 3.6-litre horizontally-opposed six-cylinder mated to the PDK dual-clutch transmission is lively and moves the Carrera Cabriolet quickly. The combination is never at a loss for power and always has enough power left in reserve to make passing slower vehicles just a blip in the weekend drive.

The Carrera is also equipped with a manual mode that can be accessed using the shifter or the steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters.

Equipped with a thundering nine-speaker AM/FM/MP3 audio system, the family gets to “enjoy” the tunes on dad’s iPod. And when they get tired of that, there’s always satellite radio.

Handling is responsive and the ride firm, but not overly jarring.

The week’s weather may not have cooperated with us, the weekend together more than made up for it.

Here’s hoping the kids don’t grow too much before the next Porsche arrives.
