Sebring’s on track at NASCAR home

Charlotte Motor Speedway is perfect for watching a race. Sightlines are unobstructed, it is easy to follow your favourite car all the way around the track, and NASCAR knows how put on a show in its home town.

The 2009 Chrysler Sebring Sedan is a perennial runner-up in a crowded field of highly capable, mid-size sedans. Up against the likes of the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata and Subaru Legacy, getting noticed in this crowd can be difficult.

That’s too bad. This is an excellent sedan with plenty of room for five, inspiring drive characteristics and luxurious interior surroundings. In Charlotte, North Carolina, the Sebring Sedan felt right at home on the back roads and highways famous as the birthplace of NASCAR.

Our model for this drive is the midrange Touring edition in the Sebring Sedan line-up. Power is provided by a 2.7-litre DOHC 24 valve V6 Flex-fuel engine. Mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, it produces 186 horsepower and plenty of usable torque.

Performance, while not NASCAR-strong, is brawny and linear throughout the acceleration cycle. As we experienced on several occasions, highway passing is easy.

Merging with the bulging traffic jams on Interstate 85, the Chrysler Sebring Sedan seemed at ease squeezing into the smallest gap between vehicles. Brakes are four-wheel disc with ABS as standard equipment on the Touring. Stops are quick; with little fade, even when traffic demands a quick response.

Inside, the Sebring Sedan offers all the creature comforts you would expect in this class of vehicle, but does so in a uniquely Chrysler fashion. Brushed satin metal accents door panels, armrests and the center console. Two cupholders provide the perfect storage setting for large coffee cups, with the same available for backseat passengers in the fold-down rear center armrest.

Gauges are elegant, with splashes of chrome featured on the steering wheel and round analogue clock mounted center dash. Stereo and HVAC settings are controlled with large round knobs in an easy-to-use trio arrangement. Seats are firm, sculpted and comfortable, for the most part. Longer trips may require stopping to stretch your legs as lower back support is somewhat lacking.

Design queues for the Sebring Sedan Touring reflect rounded edges, an impressive side profile and middle-of-the-pack dimensions. The hood looks as though it has been taken off the now discontinued Chrysler Crossfire. For the most part, it works well and is one of the unique design elements of this surprisingly first-class, four-door sedan. Trunk space is excellent.

A usually short 15 km drive from the race track, The Hampton Inn Concord/Kannapolis is the hotel of choice in this area. Featuring 101 newly styled rooms and suites, it resides at exit 60 on the I-85 just south of Dale Earnhardt Blvd. Given the NASCAR setting, what could possibly be more appropriate than this?

Room sizes are large. All showcase king or two double beds, plush linens, comfortable chairs, a 27-inch colour TV, high-speed Internet access and large work space. At Hampton Inns, breakfast is included, providing the ideal setting to grab a quick bite and get to the track at record speed.

Sights worth seeing in the area include the largest collection of NASCAR racing shops in North America. In Charlotte and the surrounding region, almost all the teams currently in the series design, build and rebuild their vehicles here after each race weekend.

Fan friendly stops during our stay highlighted two of my favourites; Hendrick Motorsports and Michael Waltrip Racing’s “Raceworld USA” in Cornelius, NC. Additional must see venues of the sport include one of several pit crew schools in the area and a drive down “The Dale Trail”.

Race Day at this year’s Coca-Cola 600 stretched over two days and was eventually called due to rain. The experience of attending a race, however, and spending hours stuck in track because of it, deepened my appreciation for the sport and the 2009 Chrysler Sebring Sedan Touring.
