Boxster basks in Sunshine Coast

While I never observed the sun peering through the rain clouds that were so prevalent throughout my drive along the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, it in no way dampened my overall experience. This region of Canada is much more than the intensity of blue sky above shapely winding roads.

The 2009 Porsche Boxster PDK is the perfect companion for driving the Pacific coastline of Canada. A two-seater extraordinaire, it tackled the road with athletic aplomb. Distinctive pedigree and Boxer-engine performance are what separate this convertible from the pack.

Mounted mid-ship, the 2.9-litre six-cylinder engine produces crisp, if not thrilling, power delivery through your choice of manual or automated PDK transmissions. Our vehicle featured the fun-to-drive, seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, in which shifting gears is as easy as sliding the transmission into “D” and letting the car make changes as required.

Those more adventurous, though, have the option of moving up or down the gear range from one of two locations. Simply grab the gear lever and move it forward to shift up; backwards to shift down. Or, use your thumb and finger to engage paddle-shifters in a similar up/down motion from the three-spoke steering wheel.

Brakes are cross-drilled and ventilated four-wheel disc with four-piston aluminum monopoly callipers, ABS and stability control. Stops are dramatic only in the sense that braking power is fantastic. Porsche vehicles are equally respected for their deceleration capabilities as they are for their acceleration prowess. The 2009 Boxster doesn’t disappoint.

Flying into Vancouver, we arrived at Horseshoe Bay after a short drive to the B.C. Ferries terminal. Boarding the ferry, our trip up the Sunshine Coast began 40 minutes later in the town of Gibsons. This small, eclectic town and Molly’s Reach Restaurant in particular, are famous as the setting for the long-running TV series, “The Beachcombers”.

Following the route while exploring the significant power-to-weight ratio advantages of the mid-engine Boxster, we passed through the communities of Roberts Creek, Sechelt and Smugglers Cove. The evening was spent at Rockwater Secret Cove Resort. A stunning property overlooking the Pacific Ocean, it features poolside rooms, one and two bedroom suites and tented suites accessible by walkways snaking through old growth trees.

Rain continued its onslaught as large drops pelted the canvas roof of the Boxster the next morning. Electronic activation requires a mere 12 seconds to fully retract the top, allowing the sun to shine in. If only we could find some, the day would be perfect.

Arriving at Earls Cove, crossing time on this leg to Saltery Bay via B.C. Ferries is 50 minutes. Here the Powell River and Lake Districts are a dreamland for outdoor adventurers eager to explore.

Lund, a small fishing village located 30 minutes to the north offers first-class dining and unrivalled seafood. Owner David Bowes of The Laughing Oyster restaurant showcases the finest ingredients in a family-friendly environment overlooking the cold muscle-rich waters near Desolation Sound. Back in Powell River, the evening’s accommodations at Cooper House B&B were spacious and a welcome sight after a long day’s drive.

Storage space in the 2009 Porsche Boxster is surprisingly large. This is due mostly to the fact the Boxster has two trunks, one in the front and another rear. Several suitcases and a briefcase fit easily inside with room leftover for memories gathered along the way.

Packed and anxious to arrive on Vancouver Island, the flat six-cylinder barks to life and head to an early morning ferry crossing. Arriving on Vancouver Island in just over one hour, a sunny drive into Victoria, B.C. from Comox provides the necessary blue sky to drop the top for a few hours and bask in the fresh air.

Villa Marco Polo Inn is a unique Italian Renaissance Mansion in a city brimming with distinctive places to stay. Built in 1923, it is situated five minutes from the city’s downtown harbour. Accommodations include suites, a classic garden setting and a gourmet breakfast served fresh every morning.

In Victoria, the Porsche Boxster feels right at home. A relatively small footprint means parking is easy, even in the tight confines of a residential driveway. With so much to do in this city, getting around was more than half the fun.

With one last B.C. Ferries ride ahead, we crossed back to the mainland from Swartz Bay arriving in Tsawwassen 90 minutes later and a short drive put us back into Vancouver.

The Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island confirmed anew that beautiful means more than just clear skies and dry roads. Though I long for sun when driving a convertible, wet or dry, a British Columbia view through the windshield is an experience to be savoured.
