Behold the family coupe

Sleek and sexy best describes this week’s test car.

It has clean lines, curves in all the right places and looks good from every angle. It’s a Volkswagen Passat.

Yes, believe it or not, the German company that gave us the Golf and Touareg has come up with one juicy little number. This Passat also has the designation of CC, which stands for Comfort Coupe. And no, it’s not really a coupe — it has four doors. But I guess C4D would look dumb.

Coupes are reportedly about more than just the number of doors and one coupe-like feature in the Passat CC is the seating arrangement — there’s only room for four.

The interior itself is quite comfortable. Seats give you a good amount of support and there’s a tonne of leg room in the front and back. Even with the driver seat pushed back to where I like it, the kids had plenty of room to mark up the backs of the front seats.

This Passat packs power, heated front seats with leather seating surfaces, a leather-wrapped steering wheel complete with multi-function controls, and satellite radio.

The interior design is clean and simple, and looks great too. Everything is in its proper place and you don’t have to fiddle with too much to get it to work the way you want.

There is one thing that I did have to work at ... the directional compass. North and South were fine but East and West were backwards and when you need to calibrate it you have to drive in a circle. My question: Why do I need to calibrate it?

And what’s worse, it didn’t work after I drove around in circles in a parking lot either. So, if you’re directionally challenged, this would be your worst nightmare.

But having said all that, it is my only complaint about my Passat CC.

My wife doesn’t like the fact that the glass sunroof only has a vent feature and doesn’t open wide to let the sun in, because of the slope of the roofline.

Got cargo? Well, you’ll have no problem loading up all your goodies in the trunk — it’s cavernous - enough into which to fit at least three auto writers (yes, I checked).

Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, the Passat moves quickly with 200 horsepower and 207 lb.-ft. of torque available at a moment’s notice, and it feels more as if you’re driving a six-cylinder. Of course, you might want to take it easy on the gas, since this baby drinks premium fuel.

The Passat Comfort Coupe feels right at home on the road and even better when cruising on the highway. The suspension handles the bumps and dips, and makes you and your passengers feel calm and comfortable.

The Passat is priced right in line with the cars in its class and for some it’s damn near affordable at just under 40K.
